Moana 2 premiered in theatres in late November following the title character\u2019s quest to protect her community\u2019s ancestral way of life. This process\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/23164\/5-reasons-to-stop-deep-sea-mining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will devastate the ocean<\/a>\u00a0that Pasifika people have cherished and safeguarded for centuries.<br><br>The Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Ocean have a deep connection with and respect for this vast expanse of water, which is part of their cultural heritage and reason for survival. It is not just their home but the source of creation. In a blog, Solomon Pili Kaho\u2019ohalahala, known as Uncle Sol, a native Hawaiian Elder who was part of the Greenpeace International delegation at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) meeting in Jamaica\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/66154\/uncle-sol-pacific-voices-say-stop-deep-sea-mining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speaks to this connection<\/a>:<br><br><em>\u201cIn our culture, there is no separation between us and nature \u2013 it is who we are. No matter where we are in the deepest part of the ocean, the surface of the waters, to the land and the mountains and the sky; we are part of all of it. In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/68431\/a-letter-to-gerard-barron-ceo-of-the-metals-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letter to Gerard Barron<\/a>, the CEO of The Metals Company, Pelenatita Kara, the Deep Sea Mining Coordinator for the Civil Society Forum Tonga writes:<br><br><em>\u201cYou have claimed that\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2023\/07\/29\/james-cameron-deep-sea-mining-better-ravaging-rainforests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>the deep ocean is a place \u2018where no one lives<\/em><\/a><em>\u2019, which shows a total lack of humanity and regard for the Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific Ocean. We have called it home for centuries, revere the deep ocean in our cultural heritage, and rely on the whole ocean to survive.\u201d<\/em><br><br>The Pasifika people\u2019s lives and identities are intrinsically linked to the ocean and the life it supports. As they stand together against this sinister industry that values money more than people\u2019s lives, we\u2019ll stand with them. We have the opportunity to help stop the deep sea mining industry, which will destroy the ocean and the tens of thousands of years of history and cultural heritage of First Nations and Pasifika people.<br><br>If we raise our voices alongside theirs, we will become a choir so loud that governments can\u2019t ignore it. No matter how long it takes, we can and will stop deep sea mining before it starts and reach our happy ending, just like\u00a0<strong>Moana<\/strong>.
