The Metals Company confirmed in late April that they have submitted the first-ever commercial mining application to the US government, with the company stating they are \u201cready to go\u201d.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Jurnasyanto Sukarno \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Labuan, Malaysia<\/strong> \u2013 Greenpeace Malaysia stages an action against the deep-sea mining vessel \u2018Hidden Gem\u2019, docked off the coast of Labuan, urging the government to back a global moratorium on the controversial industry, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/apr\/26\/trump-deep-sea-mining\">scientists warn<\/a> pose serious and potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/deep-sea-mining-impacts-still-felt-forty-years-study-shows-2025-03-27\/\">irreversible threats to ocean systems, marine biodiversity, and climate stability<\/a>.<br><br>The Hidden Gem vessel, commissioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2025\/04\/the-metals-company-applied-to-the-u-s-for-a-deep-sea-mining-license\/\">The Metals Company (TMC)<\/a> and owned by Allseas, is part of a broader push to bypass <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20250528-trump-s-drive-for-ocean-bed-mining-threatens-law-of-the-sea\">international safeguards set by the International Seabed Authority (ISA)<\/a>, despite mounting concerns of long-term environmental harm by almost 40 countries. This follows an executive order signed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/apr\/26\/trump-deep-sea-mining\">U.S. President Donald Trump to fast-track ocean floor mining permits<\/a>.<br><br>As ISA holds critical talks in Jamaica this month on the possibility of approving mining in international waters, the demonstration, joined by Greenpeace volunteer Sharifah Sofia, comes as part of a global campaign to raise the alarm on:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The need for ocean protection and environmental rights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To stop deep sea mining before it begins with a global moratorium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And to expose Allseas\u2019 connection to the destructive deep-sea mining industry while asking them to stop their support of TMC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Greenpeace is calling on Malaysians to join the global community in demanding a global moratorium on deep sea mining; a call echoed by scientists, Indigenous communities, and concerned citizens worldwide. At the same time, we demand Malaysia sign the Global Ocean Treaty into law in order to protect 30% of our oceans by 2030.<br><br><strong>Greenpeace Malaysia Campaign Lead Heng Kiah Chun said:<\/strong><br>\u201cThe deep sea is one of the last wild places on Earth, home to life we barely understand. Deep-sea mining could destroy it forever, wiping out species that took millions of years to evolve. The science is clear: We cannot gamble with the ocean\u2019s future. Our oceans are not for sale. That\u2019s why we\u2019re calling for a global moratorium on deep-sea mining to stop deep-sea mining before it starts, and to protect our blue planet before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Environmental advocate Sharifah Sofia said:<\/strong><br>\u201cWe\u2019re on the brink of no return, yet our species\u2019 continues racking up environmental debts that no one can afford to pay. The word \u2018crisis\u2019 is not strong enough to convey the fearful feeling of the alarming speed at which climate change is progressing &#8211; and we can\u2019t adapt fast enough.
