At the Marrakech climate talks record speed must be the new normal<\/span><\/p>\n

Marrakech, 6 November 2016 – As governments start turning Paris Agreement promises into action at UN climate talks in Morocco this week, Greenpeace urges them to stop any new fossil fuel developments and make the record speed of the accord\u2019s ratification the new normal. [1]<\/span><\/p>\n

Greenpeace Global Climate Policy Lead, Kaisa Kosonen, said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe saw the Paris agreement enter into force with ambitious goals and record speed, now we must see action that breaks new records every year. We will be the generation that ends fossil fuels and embraces a 100% renewable energy world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, the UN Environment Programme issued a stark warning to governments about the unfinished business from Paris. [2] Even if countries\u2019 current national contributions to the Agreement were implemented in full, the world would see an average global temperature rise which is double the level agreed in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis gap between the goal and the action is a problem that will need to be fixed in the very near future with, as the UNEP says, faster and deeper emission cuts. Otherwise we\u2019ll let the agreement\u2019s temperature goal slip out of reach before the ink has dried.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere in Morocco, governments must focus on delivering a two-year work plan for a strong rulebook, faster emission cuts and increased support for the poor and vulnerable,\u201d added Kosonen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ghalia Fayad, Greenpeace Mediterranean Arab world programme leader said: \u201cIt is time for the leaders of the world to listen to the people they represent, commit, and be much more ambitious in the urgently needed transition to a 100% RE world. The world is progressively moving towards renewable energy and Morocco should be at the forefront of this transition in the Arab world and north African region.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And as a photo representing the hosting country and the shift to 100% RE, Greenpeace unfurled #SunUnitesUs banners, on the eve of the COP22, in the iconic world heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou in southern Morocco, sending a strong message to leaders about the massive potential of solar and renewable energy in the fight against climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nous sommes la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration qui mettra fin aux \u00e9nergies fossiles et qui fera la transition vers un monde aliment\u00e9 enti\u00e8rement par les \u00e9nergies renouvelables”, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 Kaisa Kosonen, cheffe de la politique climatique globale de Greenpeace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jeudi, le Programme des Nations unies pour l’environnement (UNEP) a adress\u00e9 un avertissement fort aux gouvernements au sujet des t\u00e2ches qui restaient \u00e0 accomplir depuis la signature de l’Accord de Paris. M\u00eame dans le cas o\u00f9 les contributions actuelles de ces pays au niveau national \u00e9taient appliqu\u00e9es dans leur totalit\u00e9, le monde assisterait \u00e0 une augmentation moyenne des temp\u00e9ratures globales \u00e9quivalant au double de la limite fix\u00e9e dans l’Accord de Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Ce foss\u00e9 entre les objectifs fix\u00e9s et les actes est un probl\u00e8me qui doit \u00eatre r\u00e9gl\u00e9 dans un futur tr\u00e8s proche. Cela doit \u00eatre fait en passant, comme l’a recommand\u00e9 le Programme des Nations unies pour l’environnement, par une r\u00e9duction plus rapide et drastique des \u00e9missions. Sinon, la limite de l’augmentation des temp\u00e9ratures fix\u00e9e par cet accord deviendra inatteignable avant m\u00eame que l’encre ne soit s\u00e8che\u201d, a expliqu\u00e9 Kaisa Kosonen.<\/span><\/p>\n
