Open letter from the Civil Society and youth of North Africa and the\u00a0Middle East (MENA) \/ Arab World to the \u201cAbu Dhabi Ascent\u201d\u00a0participants<\/h2>\n

We, the youth and civil society of the area comprised of the MENA\u00a0region and the Arab World welcome you all to our region, and commend\u00a0you on your efforts to fight climate change, which is an ever-growing\u00a0concern for current and future generations. We also commend the\u00a0government of the UAE for organizing this preparatory event.<\/p>\n

We would also like to take this opportunity to call on all parties involved\u00a0in the Abu Dhabi Ascent to take new direct and ambitious actions to\u00a0ensure the success of the Climate Summit, taking place this September\u00a0in New York, with the aim of reaching zero net greenhouse gas\u00a0emissions, and achieving 100% renewable energy by mid of the century.<\/p>\n

It has become impossible to deny the effects of climate change on\u00a0the MENA \/ Arab World Region. In fact, the reality of climate change\u00a0has become apparent and has factored into our everyday lives, with\u00a0dire consequences and effects to our livelihoods. We live in one of\u00a0the most arid regions in the world, and are surrounded by some of\u00a0the saltiest bodies of water on the planet. The Arab world faces\u00a0many environmental challenges such as water scarcity, low and\u00a0variable rainfalls and great exposure to drought and desertification.<\/p>\n

All that in addition to high poverty rate in the region makes the Arab\u00a0world among the world\u2019s most vulnerable regions to climate change.<\/p>\n

Climate change will only make these conditions worse on us, and\u00a0the whole world population. If no effective adaptation and mitigation\u00a0measures are set, the region will face huge reduction in agricultural\u00a0productivity and water supply, more frequent drought and heat\u00a0waves events, and loss of low-lying coastal areas due to SLR.\u00a0Thus, climate change will have significant implications on the\u00a0economic and social development of Arab countries.<\/p>\n

We specifically call on the countries of our region to show leadership in\u00a0the Summit, and use this opportunity to present new and ambitious\u00a0pledges and contributions to mitigate climate change. As one of the\u00a0richest regions in renewable energy sources developing\u00a0a renewable energy master plan on the national level can help the arab\u00a0world to phase out from fossil fuels, the MENA \/ Arab World Region is\u00a0well equipped to be at the forefront of achieving carbon neutrality and\u00a0100% renewable energy future.<\/p>\n
