OVERALL PURPOSE

Greenpeace Mena is looking for a Communications Officer to work in its engagement department. This role will support the team in developing the campaign messages to Greenpeace MENA, to have a good understanding  of the target audience and to draft the content that speaks to them. The person will also help in the media relationship of Greenpeace in the North African region, and do a day to day media monitoring. This person will help shape our communications strategies and craft the compelling messages we need to win the public argument on behalf of our planet.

RESPONSIBILITIES

CONTENT COORDINATION: Work closely with the Communication Manager to suggest content, provide insight on which story angles and platforms will be most effective, and advise campaign projects on forthcoming opportunities and help generate ideas for strategic new content. Produce, curate, edit, proofread, and aggregate content and commission translations where appropriate.

AUDIENCE UNDERSTANDING: Have a good understanding of the targeted audience, by implementing the narratives and the messages that engage with them. Give qualitative insights on the audience analytics, and suggest amendments and adaptations where necessary.

KNOWLEDGE OF MEDIA AND MEDIA RELATIONS: Maintain a strong understanding and up-to-date knowledge of the media landscape in the MENA region, with a strong focus on North African journalists and news outlets.

EVALUATION AND REPORTING: Maintain real-time monitoring across relevant communications streams (traditional and digital media) in the region to identify opportunities for reactive media relations and campaigning, as well as Greenpeace’s impact on relevant public conversations. Support project teams on monitoring media, providing insights on how campaigns are doing and what can be improved. Identify opportunities and areas of improvement based on benchmarking, new trends and organization priorities. Ensure that relevant media content is monitored and reported back in a timely manner to relevant projects.

RESPONSIVE COMMUNICATION AND RAPID RESPONSE: Scan external events or incidents that offer opportunities for the organisation and/or reputational threats to the organization, as directed by the Communications Manager.

WRITING, EDITING AND PITCHING: Prepare and/or edit features, blogs, press materials, visual materials، social media content and Q&A documents.

NETWORKING: Liaise with communication and engagement colleagues in other Greenpeace offices to share knowledge and expertise. Work with agencies, designers and freelancers to produce creative media and communication content for campaigns and projects

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a Communications role

Organization competencies

  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format, and build and maintain relationships
  • Ability to create innovative communication concepts and creative ideas to outreach to various audiences, understanding of audience segmentation
  • A positive, can-do attitude and ability to multitask and work under pressure

Functional Competencies

  • Excellent language skills in Arabic and English a must, French is desirable

Educational qualifications

  • Degree in journalism, marketing, communications or some other relevant field
