Huntly is the biggest coal burning power station in New Zealand. A relic of the fossil fuel generation, it represents our long dependence on dirty energy for power, and should be a thing of the past. In 2015, this almost became reality, when owners Genesis announced the station would be shut by 2018. They have now reneged on this decision, vowing to keep the place going until 2022.Coal fuels climate change and poisons our air. It’s time to get rid of it.
New Zealand can and should be generating all our power from renewable sources. Shutting Huntly shows we take our Paris Climate Targets seriously.
