What does this privacy policy cover?
This policy applies to the use of all the pages hosted by Greenpeace Aotearoa (previously Greenpeace New Zealand) on greenpeace.org and greenpeace.org.nz and their sub-domains.
It also applies to personal information collected by us through other means, including through petitions or by face-to-face or telephone fundraisers and when you donate.
The policy explains how Greenpeace Aotearoa collects personal information, how that information is stored and used, and what rights you have in relation to that information.

Collection of Personal Information
Greenpeace obtains personal information from you when you support a campaign, engage with our social media and digital advertising, or make a donation.
Personal information is information about an identifiable individual. Personal information that Greenpeace Aotearoa may collect about you includes your name, address, telephone number and email address and, if you are a donor, your payment details.
Personal information is generally collected directly from you. However, sometimes, we may use publicly or commercially available information to update your details. To do this, we use third-party service providers who compare the information held by Greenpeace Aotearoa against those available on public registers, such as NZ Post’s ‘Change of Address’ service.
We may occasionally supplement your data with other publicly and commercially available information. This may include census information or estimations of your wealth or potential interest in donating to ensure our communications are relevant. Sometimes, we may request other personal information from you, such as gender identity or ethnicity. Disclosure of this information is always voluntary.
Greenpeace Aotearoa does not collect personal information from you unless you voluntarily give it or where the information is publicly or commercially available, as mentioned above.

Greenpeace Aotearoa’s use of personal information
We use personal information provided to us for the purposes for which it is provided and for purposes relevant to Greenpeace Aotearoa’s work. These purposes include:

- Thanking you for your gift and showing you the impact it has made.
- Keeping you updated on our campaigning work.

We do not, and we will never, sell or rent your personal information to any entity. Greenpeace also never shares or swaps your data with another organisation unless we have made it obvious up front (e.g. to hand in a petition to the government, we would provide your first and last names along with your town or city if you have provided that). To keep our administrative costs low so more of our supporters’ money goes towards our campaigns, we utilise some trusted third-party agencies for various tasks, such as processing donation payments or fundraising on our behalf. In all these cases, the third parties only have access to the data they need to handle the process they are employed for and do not have permission to use it for other purposes.
To better reach people interested in Greenpeace on social media platforms, we may also share anonymised (or ‘hashed’) versions of your data with partners such as social media providers. This is described further below.
If you provide us with your email address, we will email you updates about the actions you take on this website and other Greenpeace appeals and information. If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from our email list, you can do so by clicking the unsubscribe link, which appears at the bottom of all emails we send. We may also communicate through mail, SMS or via phone if we believe you would be interested in our campaigns and to fundraise unless you have expressed a preference not to receive such communication. We will always offer you an opportunity to opt out of receiving communications from Greenpeace. Should you choose to opt out, we will take steps to ensure your details are excluded from future communications using that contact method.

While we use SSL encryption to protect sensitive information online, we also protect user information offline. All of your information, not just the sensitive information like a credit card number, is restricted. Only employees who need the information to perform a specific job (for example, our donation officers) are granted access to personally identifiable information.

We offer social networking sharing buttons and widgets from social media services such as Facebook, Google, and X on our website to enable you to share Greenpeace campaigns and news with friends easily. Sharing updates and appeals is a crucial method of getting campaign messages out to a large audience quickly and cost-efficiently. These social networking sharing buttons and widgets come from web servers which may track your behaviour on our website and may combine this with other information about you originating from other websites.
Greenpeace Aotearoa uses social media services to keep our supporters and others who are interested in the organisation and its activities up to date. You can manage the privacy settings in these social media platforms.

How we store personal information
Some of the servers on which Greenpeace Aotearoa’s information is stored are located overseas, in Australia, Europe and Canada. By providing us with personal information, you consent to Greenpeace Aotearoa transferring information across national borders for processing and storage purposes in accordance with this policy. All such transfers are conducted in compliance with applicable laws. Your rights to access and correct your personal information are not affected by it being stored on servers located in other countries.
