Deze blijkt twee keer zo groot als de impact van CO2. Greenpeace reageert op deze studie met onderstaand bericht:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>The European Commission must stop flying into climate crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Brussels&nbsp;\u2013 A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=SWD:2020:277:FIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new study<\/a>&nbsp;published by the European Commission on the non-CO2 impacts of aviation on the climate crisis confirms that the non-CO2 impacts of air transport is two times worse than its CO2 emissions, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1352231020305689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demonstrated by independent scientists<\/a>. While acknowledging the non-CO2 effects of aviation, such as those caused by NOx and water vapour, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=COM:2020:747:FIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Commission<\/a>&nbsp;failed to propose measures to address the non-CO2 impact of aviation as required by the ETS revision [1] and cut air travel \u2013 the most direct way of reducing airline-related emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>Greenpeace&nbsp;EU&nbsp;climate campaigner Lorelei Limousin&nbsp;said:&nbsp;<em>\u201cThe European Commission\u2019s research shows aviation is flying us into the climate crisis, yet they continue to allow tens of billions in taxpayers\u2019 money to flow into airlines\u2019 pockets without restrictions. We cannot afford to bankroll increasing emissions and massive layoffs when we are in the middle of health, climate and economic crises. The Commission must end tax exemptions and ban short-haul flights. Recovery funds must be invested in green mobility that provides sound, sustainable jobs and affordable, accessible transport for all.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ci6.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/En73DSIggvPWk91K0YTI_h7iH2ZTNc0svyUl5nZoDl59Zl8uKxhdiLRySLFo4KgQCpmU0SMAmCYC0oulDtj5k1jU_Us9kZr-_Ipf8aUC-E5_C4QhtP_r1_sDaDdxW2Q5tOms1ZYSbu-rY9PfPTQn2knTFfW8RnEFZ_xUj1TL=s0-d-e1-ft#https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-eu-unit-stateless\/8179b24b-gp1stwnf_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n\n<p>For the&nbsp;EU&nbsp;to deliver its fair share of climate action, air travel must drastically be reduced, according to research&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/45007\/new-roadmap-to-decarbonise-european-transport-by-2040\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commissioned by Greenpeace<\/a>. The researchers from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.climact.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Climact<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newclimate.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NewClimate Institute<\/a>&nbsp;show that to achieve this short-haul flights must be banned where there is a cleaner alternative, the unfair advantage provided by tax exemptions on airline tickets and fuel must end and European investments in cross border rail must increase. The&nbsp;EU&nbsp;institutions must also protect workers and set up a just transition process.<\/p>\n\n<p>European governments have already agreed to almost \u20ac30 billion in financial aid for airlines with a further \u20ac7.9 billion currently under discussion, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/2725\/airline-bailout-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European airline bailout tracker<\/a>. None of these funding schemes are linked to legally-binding environmental conditions sufficient to meet the Paris climate agreement and restrict global heating to 1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n<p>The European Commission is expected to present a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/law\/better-regulation\/have-your-say\/initiatives\/12438-Sustainable-and-Smart-Mobility-Strategy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European strategy for smart and sustainable mobility<\/a>&nbsp;on December 9, ahead of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_20_364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Year of Rail<\/a>\u201d in 2021.<\/p>\n\n<p>Note:<br>[1]&nbsp;In 2017, as part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=CELEX:32017R2392&amp;from=EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ETS revision<\/a>, the Council and the European Parliament tasked the European Commission with presenting an updated analysis of the non-CO2 effects of aviation, accompanied by a proposal on how best to address those effects, before 1 January 2020.
