The response from the companies highlight the controversy: \u201c<em>Parts of society worry that the opening will lead to major environmental consequences. (&#8230;) the industry experiences <\/em><strong><em>a lack of social acceptance<\/em><\/strong><em> for its work and a need for a &#8216;license to operate&#8217;. <\/em><em><br><\/em><em><br><\/em>There are clear voices against commercial mining from over <a href=\"https:\/\/seabedminingsciencestatement.org\/\">900 scientists<\/a>, tech companies, environmental organizations and politicians. Over<a href=\"https:\/\/deep-sea-conservation.org\/solutions\/no-deep-sea-mining\/momentum-for-a-moratorium\/\"> 30 countries<\/a>, including Canada, Germany, France, Mexico and the UK, have called for a moratorium, pause or ban on deep-sea mining. What\u2019s more,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopdeepseabedmining.org\/endorsers\/\"> 60 companies<\/a> including several leading car manufacturers and<a href=\"https:\/\/dsm-campaign.org\/our-work\/finance-and-investors\/\"> 15 financial institutions<\/a>, such as Google, Samsung, BMW, Volkswagen, along with major<a href=\"https:\/\/deep-sea-conservation.org\/solutions\/no-deep-sea-mining\/momentum-for-a-moratorium\/international-organizations\/\"> International Organizations<\/a>, fishing interests,<a href=\"https:\/\/deep-sea-conservation.org\/solutions\/no-deep-sea-mining\/momentum-for-a-moratorium\/\"> battery manufacturers, indigenous groups, and thousands of climate and youth activists<\/a> have also come out against the industry. <em><br><\/em><br>Scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X22000537?via%3Dihub\">have warned<\/a> that the slow development of the ecosystems in the Arctic deep sea and the Pacific will face irreparable damage if mining is permitted to start.
