“The tragic loss of lives and the massive destruction of
\nproperties brought about by the super-typhoon deserves immediate
\nattention and sympathy from the international community. It should
\nalso serve as a wake-up call about the need for governments to find
\nways to avert or mitigate the catastrophic impacts of extreme
\nweather events which scientists predict could become more severe
\nbecause of climate change. We are calling on governments worldwide
\nto act decisively and urgently on climate change because it is poor
\ncountries like the Philippines who bear much of the brunt from such
\nclimate impacts,” said Abigail Jabines, Climate and Energy
\ncampaigner\u00a0 for Greenpeace Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n

Reming is also the third super-typhoon this year–a first in
\nPhilippine history–and the fourth major typhoon in as many months.
\nTyphoon Milenyo (international code name Xangsane), struck the
\ncountry in September, causing more than P3 billion in damages and
\nleaving more than a hundred casualties. Super-typhoons, Paeng
\n(Cimaron) and Queenie (Chebi) followed in October and November,
\nboth adding millions of pesos more to the damages already wrought
\nby Milenyo.<\/p>\n
