The orange plates are issued specifically for electric vehicles, and its issuance by the LTO was largely spurred by the E-Jeepney and the Climate Friendly Cities Project\u2013meant to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by cities\u2013of which it is part.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>E-Jeepney project proponent GRIPP (Green Renewable Independent<br \/>\nPower Producer), and Greenpeace welcomed the move as a landmark in<br \/>\ngreener Philippine transport. The orange plates are issued<br \/>\nspecifically for electric vehicles, and its issuance by the LTO was<br \/>\nlargely spurred by the E-Jeepney and the Climate Friendly Cities<br \/>\nProject\u2013meant to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by cities\u2013of<br \/>\nwhich it is part.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe registration of the E-Jeepneys is much-awaited and smooths<br \/>\nthe way for the full implementation of the Climate Friendly Cities<br \/>\nProject, particularly when we start scaling up E-Jeepney fleets<br \/>\naround the country.\u00a0 The full-implementation of the project will<br \/>\nhopefully steer the Philippines\u2013starting with pioneering<br \/>\ncities\u2013away from harmful fossil fuels, and toward<br \/>\nclimate-friendly, sustainable, renewable energy-based transport,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid GRIPP Chair Athena Ballesteros.<\/p>\n<p>The E-Jeepneys were launched last July 4, 2007 in Makati City as<br \/>\npart of a larger initiative that demonstrates how cities can help<br \/>\nmitigate the problem of climate change through implementing<br \/>\nmeasures that would avoid the use of climate change-inducing fossil<br \/>\nfuels.\u00a0 Through the project, a fleet of electric-powered jeepneys<br \/>\nwill derive energy from biodegradable wastes from the city\u2019s wet<br \/>\nmarkets, food establishments and households, thereby helping<br \/>\nmitigate climate change even as it addresses urban problems such as<br \/>\nair pollution and solid waste.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/slideShow\/index.gne?set_id=72157606466006993&amp;\" width=\"430\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" align=\"middle\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The E-Jeepneys will now be registered under the new<br \/>\nclassification \u2018low speed vehicles\u2019 (LSV) as set forth in the IRR<br \/>\n(implementing rules and regulations) of AO AHS-2008-14 \u2018Guidelines<br \/>\nin the registration of LSVs.\u2019 The orange plates are issued to<br \/>\nprivate LSVs.\u00a0 Yellow plates and orange stickers will then be<br \/>\nissued to for-hire E-Jeepneys when the LTFRB (Land Transportation<br \/>\nand Franchising Regulatory Board) issues the permits which GRIPP<br \/>\nhopes to be processed soonest.<\/p>\n<p>Four E-Jeepneys will be among the first to be issued the plates:<br \/>\nthree units plying Makati, and one currently in UP Diliman.\u00a0 They<br \/>\nwill also be inspected by LTO\u2019s Motor Vehicle Inspection Station<br \/>\nteam.\u00a0 These jeepeneys, however, are exempted from the agency\u2019s<br \/>\nstandard smoke emission testing procedures.<\/p>\n<p>GRIPP believes the launch of the registration classification<br \/>\nwill enable better access to E-Jeepneys, promoting its<br \/>\nacceptability to transport groups.\u00a0 With current spiraling fossil<br \/>\nfuel prices, the E-Jeepneys stand to increase income levels of<br \/>\njeepney drivers by at least PHP400 a day, without the respiratory<br \/>\nhealth hazards associated with conventional, frequently smoke<br \/>\nbelching jeepeneys.\u00a0 That\u2019s aside from anticipated environmental<br \/>\nbenefits, such as less air pollution and climate change<br \/>\nmitigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem of global climate change and worsening air<br \/>\npollution are a result of really bad environmental decisions made<br \/>\nin the past.\u00a0 The E-Jeepneys represent the range of technologies<br \/>\nnow made available for us to choose a cleaner, low carbon<br \/>\ndevelopment path.\u00a0 Spiraling diesel and gasoline prices prove that<br \/>\nfossil fuels are not the energy choices for the future.\u00a0 The<br \/>\nE-Jeepneys represent the revolution toward clean, renewable energy<br \/>\nalternatives that must be implemented now, and in a much larger<br \/>\nscale, by the national government,\u201d said Greenpeace Executive<br \/>\nDirector Von Hernandez.<\/p>\n<p>The Climate Friendly Cities Project is sponsored in part by the<br \/>\nDutch Doen Foundation and is currently supported by Makati,<br \/>\nBacolod, Baguio, and Puerto Princesa Cities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Get Involved!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/seasia\/ph\/Archives\/get-involved\/sign-up\/\">Sign up for the free Greenpeace online activist e-zine. <\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Support us!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/seasia\/ph\/Archives\/campaigns\/the-great-whale-trail\/donate-now\/\">Join Greenpeace today and add your voice to the movement that\u2019s committed to defending our planet.
