GRIPP (Green Renewable Independent Power Producer) and Greenpeace today launched the commercial run the innovative E-Jeepneys, which will now ply a commercial route in public roads. The first public transport of its kind in Southeast Asia, the E-Jeepney intends to steer clear of the use of fossil fuels to help mitigate climate change while while addressing problems such as air pollution, solid waste and rising oil proces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>The first public transport system of its kind in Southeast Asia,<br \/>\nthe E-Jeepney intends to steer clear of the use of fossil fuels to<br \/>\nhelp mitigate climate change while addressing problems such as air<br \/>\npollution, solid waste, and rising oil prices.\u00a0 It does so as part<br \/>\nof the Climate Friendly Cities project, an integrated transport and<br \/>\nwaste management initiative pioneered by a consortium of<br \/>\norganizations led by GRIPP with Greenpeace, together with various<br \/>\ncities and private sector players. The project demonstrates that<br \/>\ncities can take the lead in helping address global climate change<br \/>\nby promoting sustainable transport tied in with renewable<br \/>\nenergy-based technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The E-Jeepneys ply their commercial route three days to the year<br \/>\nthe first two test units were launched in Makati City.\u00a0 The DOTC<br \/>\n(Department of Transportation and Communication) Planning and<br \/>\nTransport Division only released the E-Jeepney\u2019s guidelines for<br \/>\nregistration last April 28, allowing it on public roads ten months<br \/>\nafter the E-Jeepney\u2019s introduction.\u00a0 The final wait before the<br \/>\nE-Jeepney\u2019s full operation is the go-signal from the LTFRB (Land<br \/>\nTransportation Franchising Board) which will authorize the<br \/>\nfranchise and fare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a long period of waiting we are very happy that<br \/>\nE-Jeepneys have now been given the green light to ply commercial<br \/>\nroutes first in the City of Makati, one of our champion cities.<br \/>\nSoon the E-Jeepney will be in the Cities of Puerto Prinsesa,<br \/>\nBacolod, and Baguio,\u201d said GRIPP Chairperson Athena Ballestros.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/slideShow\/index.gne?set_id=72157605915756415&amp;\" width=\"430\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" align=\"middle\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Electric Jeepney is a win-win solution for all<br \/>\nstakeholders. It provides a climate-friendly alternative to<br \/>\npolluting, fossil-fuel based modes of transport, and enhanced<br \/>\nincome to jeepney drivers.\u00a0 The government should be embracing this<br \/>\nproject instead of letting the proponents suffer from long delays<br \/>\nin licensing and registration procedures,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>A total of four units manufactured locally by GRIPP partner<br \/>\nMVPMAP(Motor Vehicle Parts Manufacturers Association of the<br \/>\nPhilippines), will initially make its rounds in Legazpi and Salcedo<br \/>\nVillages in Makati City.\u00a0 The number will steadily be increased to<br \/>\nfifty also as new routes are determined.\u00a0 The fare is waived for<br \/>\nthe first couple of weeks while the LTFRB\u2019s\u00a0 decision is<br \/>\npending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven skyrocketing fossil fuel prices and the imminent threat<br \/>\nof dangerous climate change caused largely by fossil fuels,<br \/>\ninnovations such as the E-Jeepney, which promote renewable energy<br \/>\nsolutions, should be the technology of choice of developing<br \/>\ncountries like ours.\u00a0 The Philippines stands to lose opportunities<br \/>\nwith the current oil crisis, and we stand to lose even more lives<br \/>\nand livelihoods with the onset of severe climate change impacts,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Greenpeace Southeast Asia Executive Director Von Hernandez.<br \/>\n\u201cClearly, urgent solutions are needed.\u00a0 Aside from initiatives by<br \/>\ncities such as this project, the national government should<br \/>\ninstitute large-scale climate change solutions such as phasing out<br \/>\ncoal-fired power plants, and the immediate passage of a strong<br \/>\nrenewable energy legislation by the Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project is sponsored in part by the Dutch Doen Foundation<br \/>\nand is currently supported by Makati, Baguio and Puerto Princesa<br \/>\nCities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Get Involved!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/seasia\/ph\/Archives\/get-involved\/sign-up\/\">Sign up for the free Greenpeace online activist e-zine.
