Before his stint as Climate Change Commissioner for The Philippines, he worked with WWF Philippines for 14 years. He held several roles at WWF, including leading the climate change program and serving for three years as National Director of Earth Hour.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace Southeast Asia Regional Board Chair, Suzy Hutomo said \u201cWe are pleased to welcome Yeb Sa\u00f1o. We are confident that he will lead Greenpeace Southeast Asia to achieve our ambitious goal of protecting Southeast Asia\u2019s natural heritage from destruction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Yeb\u2019s tenure, Greenpeace will continue working together with other social and environmental movements to achieve our common goal. With the support of the people, we know that we can achieve social and environmental justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of Yeb\u2019s defining moments came during the 2013 UN Climate Summit in Warsaw where he was Philippines Chief Negotiator. Meanwhile, destructive Typhoon Haiyan tore apart communities in Tacloban, Philippines. His emotional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7SSXLIZkM3E\">speech calling for action on climate change<\/a> reached hearts around the world:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7SSXLIZkM3E\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a heart-wrenching moment that changed my life. I was thrust into a responsibility of being a voice for the unheard, a voice among thousands crying for climate justice,\u201d said Yeb.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/09\/11\/yeb-sano-climate-change-arctic\/\">he sailed on the Greenpeace ship, the Esperanza<\/a>, into the Arctic Ocean to draw attention to the effects climate change is having all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>Although he was far from home, he wanted to demonstrate how this common problem affects people all over the world differently. <a href=\"http:\/\/ecowatch.com\/2014\/09\/11\/yeb-sano-climate-change-arctic\/\">He said:<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was born over 8500 kilometers from the North Pole, and yet I have come to realize that my future and the future of my country is tied to the fate of the melting Arctic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yeb joins Greenpeace with the firm belief that the solution to the world\u2019s ecological crisis does not exist in the corridors of power, but by catalysing an interconnected, global movement of people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe battle cannot be won merely within the confines of the institutions we have built and the boundaries of my own country.
