After decades of building the conversation around climate change, is this the tipping point that we\u2019ve been waiting for? What does it mean to call for climate justice?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The call for climate justice is about coming together to reclaim the rights of people who have the least responsibility for the climate emergency, yet suffer its greatest consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Filipinos come face-to-face with some of the strongest storms in human history. Everyone deserves a future where dreams and ambitions live, rather than being shattered.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six years later, she is standing up both for herself and for her community. She was among the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/philippines\/story\/3302\/live-blog-typhoon-haiyan-survivor-stages-a-solo-protest-at-the-shell-headquarters-in-the-philippines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lone protesters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who, for four days, made a stand, not only for themselves, but to represent the countless silenced voices, the oppressed calls for justice, and the unheard stories of their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">JUST IN: Fred dela Cruz, a fisherman, is in front of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Shell?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Shell<\/a>&#8216;s headquarters in Manila to call for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ClimateJustice?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ClimateJustice<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2nzlPVeJQj\">pic.twitter.com\/2nzlPVeJQj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greenpeace Philippines (@gpph) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gpph\/status\/1173823315187654662?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 17, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tatay Fred was standing up for fisherfolk communities struggling with warming seas. Ate Car\u00e9, as a mother, was standing up for her children. Derek Cabe was standing up for a livable future for her community in Bataan. RJ de Ramos, Francis Talatayod, Marinel Ubaldo, Krishna Ariola, and young people from Marikina, Tacloban and Bacolod, are all youth leaders standing up for their future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These voices from the frontlines were standing up against the biggest fossil fuel giants (\u201cCarbon Majors\u201d), as embodied by Pilipinas Shell, and telling them to acknowledge their role in the climate emergency. According to a study on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/articles\/media\/new-report-shows-just-100-companies-are-source-of-over-70-of-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon Majors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Shell is one of the top 5 contributors to global industrial historical emissions, and there is evidence that it knew about climate change decades ago and misled the public about it. The collective evidence on the fossil fuel industry\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-consensus-97-per-cent\/2018\/sep\/19\/shell-and-exxons-secret-1980s-climate-change-warnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deceit on climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on national record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/philippines\/press\/1237\/the-climate-change-and-human-rights-petition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">landmark National Inquiry before\u00a0 the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Shell is one of the 47 named respondent Carbon Majors. On September 19, the final <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-philippines-stateless\/2016\/07\/86837911-memorandum-for-the-petitioners_received-copy-rdc.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memorandum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the case was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/greenpeaceph\/videos\/888778281507318\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submitted by the petitioners to the Commission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At 2:00pm, people raised the alarm during the climate emergency hour in solidarity with frontline communities. Now, we\u2019re calling for system change. We have to create; it\u2019s the only thing louder than destruction.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have to create systems and policies that serve the many, rather than the few. We have to create new ways of communicating and telling our stories. No single person, no single solution can solve the climate crisis. It will take\u00a0 collective efforts of sounding the alarm on the climate emergency to raise the consciousness on system-wide solutions for dealing with this problem. Change will only happen if we act together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are now moving into a new era of climate activism, one where millions are rallying around a vision of a better world. It is important to be clear not only about what we stand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">against<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but also on what we stand <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story of climate justice is a story of who is at risk, and who is responsible. It is a story that tells us what people are willing to come together for, and what we strive to protect. It is the story of a generation.
