This translates to 21.93 million Filipinos who cannot afford to buy their basic food and non-food needs. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthwise, the country is confronted with a double burden case of malnutrition: twenty percent (20%) of children 0-5 years old are underweight while thirty percent (30%) of Filipino adults aged 20 and above are overweight or obese.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But beyond challenges on nutrition and energy needed to perform daily tasks, the issue of food, particularly the way it is produced and distributed, is as well very crucial for our survival as it is also among the largest drivers of climate change and environmental degradation &#8212; including biodiversity loss, soil degradation, water pollution, and land-use change.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years there is a high demand for meat and processed meat products in the country. It is now common to see hills and mountains of maize in once-forested areas. Globally, industrial meat production accounts for 14% of greenhouse gas emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intensive animal production also causes air, water, and soil pollution, such as from chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in feed production; the use and disposal of antibiotics and other anti-microbials for preventive treatments; wastes from slaughterhouses; manure from piggeries and poultry farms; and disposal of affected hogs and chicken infected with African Swine Fever and Avian Flu viruses;\u00a0 among others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientists4lessmeat.org\/\">Scientists around the world<\/a> are now also calling for Mayors to pave the way to tackle the huge impact that industrial meat production and consumption has on our planet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is, there are already cities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c40.org\/press_releases\/good-food-cities\">including Quezon City<\/a>, that have committed to working with their citizens to achieve a Planetary Health Diet for all by 2030.\u00a0 Among the policies that they will introduce are those that make healthy, delicious and low-carbon food affordable and accessible for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3613\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3613\" class=\"wp-image-3613 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-philippines-stateless\/2019\/10\/1d9f70ba-gp0sts2r1-1024x705.jpg\" alt=\"World Meat Free Week in Quezon City. \u00a9 Greenpeace\" width=\"1024\" height=\"705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-philippines-stateless\/2019\/10\/1d9f70ba-gp0sts2r1-1024x705.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-philippines-stateless\/2019\/10\/1d9f70ba-gp0sts2r1-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-philippines-stateless\/2019\/10\/1d9f70ba-gp0sts2r1-768x529.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-philippines-stateless\/2019\/10\/1d9f70ba-gp0sts2r1-494x340.jpg 494w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-philippines-stateless\/2019\/10\/1d9f70ba-gp0sts2r1.jpg 1199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Quezon City government employees join the celebration of the World Meat-Free Week at the Quezon City Hall<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/2019\/08\/08\/land-is-a-critical-resource_srccl\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Report on Land<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says that balanced diets featuring plant-based foods \u2014 such as coarse grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables, and animal-sourced food produced sustainably in low greenhouse gas emission systems \u2014 present major opportunities for adaptation to, and limiting, climate change. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If all Filipinos refrain from eating meat for one day per week for one year, this would prevent almost 6.6 million metric tons of CO2 emissions.
