TACLOBAN, Philippines (08 November 2023)\u2014President Marcos Jr. delivered a speech in Tacloban City today in time for the 10th anniversary of Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n
Reacting to this, Greenpeace campaigner Jefferson Chua said:<\/p>\n\n
\u201cThe President in his speech said that we don\u2019t know the real scope of losses from Yolanda. This is true, but the government must also recognize that this unimaginable burden is being put squarely on the shoulders of vulnerable communities\u2014such is the case of Tacloban 10 years after Yolanda and hundreds of other Filipino communities in the face of climate impacts.<\/p>\n\n
Simply remembering the storm and the scale of its devastation is no longer enough; if our government is truly prioritizing climate justice, then it must first place accountability on those responsible for the climate crisis\u2014the oil and gas companies who continue to profit trillions from their dirty business.<\/p>\n\n
We are sending a clear demand to the Marcos administration: make polluters pay for their role in the climate crisis. At COP28, he should demand climate reparations from fossil fuel corporations and countries alike, and institute policies that will deliver justice to communities.<\/p>\n\n
