Reacting to this, Marian Ledesma, Greenpeace International INC-5 delegate and Greenpeace Philippines zero waste campaigner, said:

“As the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations reach its critical final moments, Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, must lead the call to tackle the root of the crisis—plastic production. Vulnerable communities such as our fisherfolk, coastal communities, and waste workers, are already suffering the impacts of unchecked plastic production. Supporting a global target for plastic reduction is essential to protect livelihoods, safeguard public health, curb waste, and ensure a safer, more sustainable future for all.”

“Southeast Asian leaders must push for measures to phase out single-use plastics like sachets, a major source of pollution in the region. By committing to reduce production and supporting a just transition to reuse and refill systems, the Philippines and the region can foster innovation, create sustainable economic opportunities, and strengthen the region’s capacity to address environmental challenges. The world is watching—now is the time for bold action.”

###

Media Contact:

James Relativo, Greenpeace Philippines Communications Campaigner jrelativ@greenpeace.org | +63 919 069 3424 (SMART) | +63 960 480 0297 (Viber & WhatsApp)

As the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations reach its critical final moments, Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, must lead the call to tackle the root of the crisis—plastic production.

"p4_og_title":"Greenpeace statement on INC-5 Chair's latest paper","p4_og_description":"As the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations reach its critical final moments, Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, must lead the call to tackle the root of the crisis—plastic production.","p4_og_image":"https://www.greenpeace.org/static/planet4-philippines-stateless/2024/12/8c6beed1-gp0su3jkf_medium-res-1200px.jpg","p4_og_image_id":"67400","p4_seo_canonical_url":"","p4_campaign_name":"Plastic Free Future","p4_local_project":"","p4_basket_name":"Plastics","p4_department":"

2
8,17],"p4-page-type":[14
post-67399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sustainability","tag-plastic","tag-pollution","p4-page-type-press
["GET
