Among the signatories is the Philippines, one of the countries most vulnerable to climate impacts and plastic pollution.

Reacting to this, Marian Ledesma, Greenpeace Philippines Zero Waste Campaigner and Greenpeace International delegate to the Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, said:

“The Nice Declaration sends a powerful message: to protect people and the planet, we must tackle the root of the problem—plastic overproduction driven by fossil fuels and single-use plastic addiction by corporations. For countries like the Philippines, where the impacts of plastic pollution and climate change are deeply felt, this is a matter of justice. We cannot allow corporate profits to outweigh the health of the children and the safety of our communities.

“Greenpeace welcomes the Philippines’ support for the declaration, but this endorsement must be more than symbolic. The government must match its global stance with national action by enacting policies that reduce plastic production, phase out single-use plastics, and establish systems for reuse and refill to thrive. The Philippines has an opportunity to lead by example by turning this commitment into real, lasting solutions at home.

“At the next round of negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland this August, countries including the Philippines must stand firm—no weak compromises, no loopholes, and no pandering to fossil fuel and petrochemical interests. We need a treaty that has teeth—one that cuts plastic production, holds polluters accountable, and protects frontline communities.”

###

Note to Editors:

A statement, signed by 234 civil society organizations, was also released in support of the Nice declaration.

For more information and interview requests, please contact:

Karl Orit
Communications Campaigner
Greenpeace Southeast Asia – Philippines
karl.orit@greenpeace.org | +63 919 457 1064 (Viber & WhatsApp)

"p4_og_title":"Greenpeace welcomes “Nice Declaration”","p4_og_description":"As 95 member states reaffirmed their common ambition to end plastic pollution through the ministerial declaration “The Nice wake up call for an ambitious plastics treaty” at the United Nations Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, Greenpeace hailed the move as a crucial step toward ending plastic pollution but stressed that declarations must now turn into concrete global and national action.","p4_og_image":"","p4_og_image_id":"","p4_seo_canonical_url":"","p4_campaign_name":"Plastic Free Future","p4_local_project":"","p4_basket_name":"Plastics","p4_department":"

2
8,17],"p4-page-type":[14
post-67940","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sustainability","tag-plastic","tag-pollution","p4-page-type-press
["GET
