One of these companies is US tuna brand, Bumble Bee. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/55466\/investigation-suspected-human-rights-abuse-bumblebee-fcf-seafood\/\">2022 Greenpeace East Asia report <\/a>found Bumble Bee and its Taiwanese owner \u2014 tuna trader FCF \u2014 sourced tuna from vessels that appear in numerous reports of illegal fishing and human rights abuses&#8230; and not for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortunebusinessinsights.com\/industry-reports\/tuna-fish-market-100744\">Tuna is big business<\/a>: US consumers make up the world&#8217;s LARGEST market for canned tuna, with the EU close behind and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futuremarketinsights.com\/reports\/canned-tuna-market\">tuna demand in the Middle East and Latin America growing rapidly<\/a>. Consumers worldwide are increasingly curious about where their seafood comes from. This is unacceptable. Bumble Bee Foods cannot tolerate the root causes of modern slavery, illegal fishing, and deaths of observers and workers as part of its supply chain.\n\nTo protect the workers in your supply chain and the oceans from destruction, Bumble Bee needs to upgrade its human rights policy for tuna vessels to reflect international standards and best practices on human and labor rights\u2014especially freedom of association and collective bargaining, racial discrimination, recruitment fees, rest hours, and minimum wage. The policy needs to include a maximum of three months of continuous-time at sea and preferential sourcing from vessels subject to effective port State labor inspections. What\u2019s more, the policy must lay out a clear and effective monitoring program.\n\nAdditionally, Bumble Bee must address the root causes of alleged human rights abuses and illegal fishing in FCF\u2019s supply chain, including through increased worker engagement. Plus, Bumble Bee should commit to adopting a robust human rights due diligence process that is aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business &#038; Human Rights. After this decision, the two companies will not be legally permitted to continue deforestation beyond the 8,828 hectares of Indigenous forestland that has already been cleared for palm oil plantations.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;\u201cThis is the decision we\u2019ve been waiting for. Enough is enough, companies must stop destroying forests and customary lands. What else do these companies want to do to our customary land? Obey this decision and let us take care of our Indigenous land ourselves. Hopefully with this lawsuit, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will know that the companies have no good intentions, and will immediately revoke permits for PT KCP and PT MJR. Hendrikus Frangky Woro and Gregorius Yame were intervening in a lawsuit filed by two oil palm plantation companies in the Boven Digoel area, PT. Kartika Cipta Pratama (KCP) and PT. Megakarya Jaya Raya (MJR) against the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.&lt;\/figcaption&gt;&lt;\/figure&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:image --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;PT MJR and PT KCP, located in one contiguous block in the new province of South Papua,&nbsp; registered their lawsuits with the Jakarta court earlier this year on March 10 and March 15. Through their lawsuits, which were handled together by the court, the two companies aimed to overturn a decree by the Minister for Environment and Forestry regarding state forest release permits, which, among other things, required the companies to refrain from further clearing of forested land for oil palm plantations.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;Gergorius Yame and five other Indigenous Awyu people registered as intervening parties in the lawsuit on May 9, 2023. During hearings the Awyu people and their legal team presented evidence, witnesses, and experts in support of their land rights and to support the Minister of Environment and Forestry in rebutting the case by the two palm oil companies.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;\u201cBy throwing their weight behind the Environment Ministry\u2019s case, the Awyu Indigenous landowners and their legal team have assisted the government to secure this crucial win. Now it\u2019s time for Environment Minister Siti Nurbaya herself to work with government colleagues both national and local to fast track full legal recognition for the Awyu\u2019s land rights, which have existed since time immemorial. The Awyu are best placed to continue to protect and manage their own forest, and have the right to determine their own livelihoods and future,\u201d said Sekar Banjaran Aji, a member of the Awyu community&#039;s legal team.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;The legal intervention arises from the struggle by West Papua\u2019s Indigenous peoples to defend their customary forests from land grabbing by plantation companies, the scale of which is documented in a recent &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/issuu.com\/greenpeaceinternational\/docs\/license_to_clear_the_dark_side_of_permitting_in_we\/1?ff&amp;hideShareButton=true&amp;backgroundColorFullscreen=%23886454&quot;&gt;Greenpeace International report&lt;\/a&gt;. Further litigation is also underway in the Jayapura Administrative Court: on March 13, Hendrikus &#039;Franky&#039; Woro, an environmentalist and leader of the Woro clan of the Awyu People, challenged an environmental permit issued by the Papua Provincial government for another palm oil company, PT Indo Asiana Lestari. Hearings are still underway in that case.&nbsp;&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;&quot;It&#039;s rare that we have something to celebrate like today\u2019s news. We hope there will be more good news from the environmental and climate change lawsuit being heard in Jayapura. Hopefully we will win again in the Jayapura court,&quot; said Hendrikus Woro.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;A member of the legal team for the Awyu, Tigor Gemdita Hutapea added that these lawsuits demonstrate the pressing need for the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to immediately recognize Indigenous land rights over forest lands.&nbsp;&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;!-- \/wp:paragraph --&gt;\n\n&lt;!-- wp:paragraph --&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;\u201cRecognition of customary forests is very important to keep Indigenous communities from conflict with companies overrunning their land and livelihoods. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry should learn from the outcome of this case that Tanah Papua is not \u2018empty land\u2019. Whilst they claim that \u201csustainable fishing is important to us\u201d, reports have found otherwise. In 2022, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/55510\/how-trustworthy-seafood-brands-bumblebee-fcf\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greenpeace East Asia <\/a>traced back one of their tuna products and found evidence of it being linked to a vessel whose crew were indicted on charges related to forced labor and human trafficking. After that he was forced to continue working until the work was finished and only then was he allowed to rest. In the morning when we woke up for breakfast, we found him dead in his room.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cheap seafood comes at a cost and this story from a fisher who worked on a vessel that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/press-release\/53401\/nine-indicted-abusing-crew-taiwan-fishing-vessel-dawang\/\">supplied to Bumblebee<\/a> is just one of many that reports the alleged treatment of workers in the fishing industry.
