This is unacceptable. Bumble Bee Foods cannot tolerate the root causes of modern slavery, illegal fishing, and deaths of observers and workers as part of its supply chain.

To protect the workers in your supply chain and the oceans from destruction, Bumble Bee needs to upgrade its human rights policy for tuna vessels to reflect international standards and best practices on human and labor rights—especially freedom of association and collective bargaining, racial discrimination, recruitment fees, rest hours, and minimum wage. The policy needs to include a maximum of three months of continuous-time at sea and preferential sourcing from vessels subject to effective port State labor inspections. What’s more, the policy must lay out a clear and effective monitoring program.

Additionally, Bumble Bee must address the root causes of alleged human rights abuses and illegal fishing in FCF’s supply chain, including through increased worker engagement. Plus, Bumble Bee should commit to adopting a robust human rights due diligence process that is aligned with the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights. Bumble Bee must implement full transparency of all its suppliers, including their labor practices and remediation of violations, complete oversight of fishing practices, strong observer protections, and a time-bound plan to phase out transshipment at sea are critical to preventing tainted seafood from being sold in the US.

It’s time for Bumble Bee to chart a new path and show customers that it is serious about putting people and the health of our oceans at the heart of its decisions.

Do you know what’s in your can of seafood?

Greenpeace research found that a Bumble Bee tuna can purchased from Harris Teeter (a wholly owned subsidiary of Kroger Co.) in Arlington, Virginia on April 12, 2022 was sourced from DA WANG, a Taiwanese-owned fishing vessel that was confirmed to have indicators of forced labor by US Customs and Border Protection.

Who are Bumblebee?

Owned by Taiwanese company FCF – one of the largest tuna traders in the world – the seafood brand can be found in supermarkets all across the US.
