Mangroves and coral reefs shield us from strong winds and waves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waters are also a place of awesome beauty and home to more than 80% of the world\u2019s biodiversity. \u00a0This includes beloved sea creatures like whales, dolphins, sharks, dugong, turtles and manta-rays. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the World Register of Marine Species, there are around 240,470 known species, but this is believed to be just a small fraction of the species that exist, with new marine life being discovered everyday!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oceans are also a source of livelihood to millions. Purse seiners use fish aggregation devices, or FADs, to set net around, which are a highly destructive method of fishing.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><i>Oceans in peril<br \/>\n<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the oceans are not what they used to be. The news nowadays paints a grim picture of the state of global oceans. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everywhere, there are cases of pollution\u2014 from plastic to oil spills\u2014 choking the life out of sea creatures who are silently helpless. Time and again, we find birds, dolphins, and turtles washed ashore in the beaches of the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia, usually dying because of ingesting plastic wastes (big and small) that are being dumped in the ocean.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish is slowly disappearing because of unsustainable fishing practices by an industry that is always hungry for profit. Roughly 90% of the fish in our ocean have already been fished by big companies that are engaged in illegal and destructive fishing practices that not only endanger the marine environment and other sea creatures, but also endanger thousands of fish workers in the region. But the truth is, it needs our help now more than ever. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what exactly can we do to help protect and restore the oceans back to its healthy, pristine state?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are 5 ways YOU can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><\/b><b> <\/b><b>Read the news and dive deeper into oceans issues<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many news and information out there and it\u2019s good to educate yourself and others on the beauty and threats to our oceans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out what is happening in the marine environment right now- celebrate the good (share the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/media\/cinematic\/video\/1341892001\/rare-rainbow-blanket-octopuses-caught-on-camera-in-the-phillippines\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video of that rare rainbow \u2018blanket\u2019 octopus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently sighted in the Philippines), and the bad (share that investigative<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/explore\/seafood-from-slaves\/ap-investigation-slaves-may-have-caught-the-fish-you-bought.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report on human slavery in the high seas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b><\/b><b>#BreakFreeFromPlastic<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastic ain\u2019t fantastic. It\u2019s a serious pollutant (it\u2019s a byproduct of fossil fuels) and endangers marine animals and other important wildlife.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be an example to friends and family and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/40815\/petition\/1?ea.tracking.id=Planet4&amp;_ga=2.28516863.216505877.1559875795-281246604.1499670505\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">say no to single-use plastics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bags, straws, cutlery, etc.) now and forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b><\/b><b> <\/b><b>Be a smart seafood consumer<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love seafood? Whether you prefer it fresh or from the can, it\u2019s good to be aware if the product you are buying was caught sustainably and ethically. This ensures that companies and brands were not involved in any \u2018fish crimes\u2019 such as illegal and unsustainable fishing practices that harm the marine environment or even endanger fishermen and labourers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check out the latest Greenpeace<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/publication\/638\/from-sea-to-can\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tuna cannery ranking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Southeast Asia, see if your favourite brand passed the green criteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Initiate and support an oceans education program for the youth<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to start them young and to make them appreciate the importance of saving the marine environment early on. So schools need to allocate significant resources, like time and budget, to set up an oceans education program for their students, even their parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High school and university students can be molded into future leaders. By inspiring and motivating them to protect our oceans, we can hope to achieve systematic changes needed to save the environment as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b><\/b><b> <\/b><b>Ask your government to support the UN treaty to protect global oceans<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a new treaty in town to save our seas from further degradation and abuse. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governments have started work on a UN Ocean Treaty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that will hopefully protect a third of the oceans and declare it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-limits to fishing, mining and other destructive industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace started an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/41284\/petition\/1?ea.tracking.id=Planet4&amp;_ga=2.65212141.216505877.1559875795-281246604.1499670505\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online petition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to put the pressure on world leaders to set things right and agree on stronger resolutions to protect global oceans for present and future generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world needs people committed to protect the oceans and keep it healthy, safe, and full of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Show your love for the deep blue, not just during Oceans Month, but with every breath you take.
