{"id":3033,"date":"2019-09-04T12:00:49","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T04:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/?p=3033"},"modified":"2024-05-28T20:47:58","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T13:47:58","slug":"greenpeace-calls-on-fast-food-giants-to-take-a-stand-against-bolsonaros-amazon-destruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/press\/3033\/greenpeace-calls-on-fast-food-giants-to-take-a-stand-against-bolsonaros-amazon-destruction\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenpeace calls on fast food giants to take a stand against Bolsonaro\u2019s Amazon destruction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manaus, Brazil \u2013 As fires continue to ravage the Amazon, Greenpeace International has launched <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/act.greenpeace.org\/page\/47854\/petition\/1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a campaign asking fast food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> giants Burger King, McDonald\u2019s and KFC to reject goods linked to environmental destruction in the Amazon and across Brazil.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPresident <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolsonaro <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can only pursue his anti-environmental agenda so long as companies are willing to accept the products that fuel destruction and exacerbate climate change. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast food companies buying from Brazil cannot continue business as usual while the biggest rainforest in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the world is burnt down for cattle farms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d said Tica Minami, Campaign Director at Greenpeace Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Close to 2.5 million hectares of land \u2013 including significant new deforestation \u2013 was burned in Brazilian Amazon during August, according to new data published by INPE on September 3.[1] The number of fires in the Amazon increased by 111% since the start of President Bolsonaro\u2019s presidency.[2]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast food companies are important users of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/22247\/countdown-extinction-report-deforestation-commodities-soya-palm-oil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">products that drive deforestation in Brazil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 beef and soya (used in animal feed).[3] They also contribute new demand by aggressively marketing meat products in emerging markets and around the world.[4] McDonald\u2019s, Burger King, KFC and other fast food companies have zero deforestation policies in place <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/22247\/countdown-extinction-report-deforestation-commodities-soya-palm-oil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but are failing to meet these commitments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other sectors, VF Corporation, owner of Timberland and The North Face, announced that it is suspending leather purchases from Brazil until \u201cthe materials used in our products do not contribute to environmental harm in the country.\u201d[5] Investment firms Nordea Asset Management, Storebrand ASA and KLP pension fund announced activities to monitor or limit investments in Brazil.[6]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a crisis. We can&#8217;t protect the climate without the Amazon. Companies don&#8217;t have the luxury of staying silent. Burger King, McDonald\u2019s and KFC need to take a stand against the increase in forest destruction under Bolsonaro&#8217;s term, for the sake of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil and everyone on the planet.\u201d said Minami.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People around the world are expected to demonstrate for Amazon Day tomorrow, following a call from Brazil&#8217;s biggest Indigenous association, APIB.[7] The Amazon is also expected to be a prominent issue as people take to the streets during Climate Week in New York City and the Student and General Strikes September 20th and 27th respectively.
