{"id":3746,"date":"2020-04-03T20:10:56","date_gmt":"2020-04-03T13:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/?p=3746"},"modified":"2024-05-28T16:25:24","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T09:25:24","slug":"wilmar-internationals-exit-from-the-high-carbon-stock-approach-marks-its-failure-to-end-deforestation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/press\/3746\/wilmar-internationals-exit-from-the-high-carbon-stock-approach-marks-its-failure-to-end-deforestation\/","title":{"rendered":"Wilmar International\u2019s exit from the High Carbon Stock Approach marks its failure to end deforestation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Jakarta, 3 April 2020 \u2013 Wilmar International,\nthe world\u2019s largest palm oil trader, has taken a further backward step in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsumergoodsforum.com\/implementing-and-scaling-up-the-cgf-zero-net-deforestation-commitment\/\">implementing its<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsumergoodsforum.com\/implementing-and-scaling-up-the-cgf-zero-net-deforestation-commitment\/\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theconsumergoodsforum.com\/implementing-and-scaling-up-the-cgf-zero-net-deforestation-commitment\/\">commitment<\/a> to removing deforestation from its\ncommodity supply chains by resigning from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.highcarbonstock.org\/\">High Carbon\nStock Approach<\/a> (HCSA) the most credible and widely supported\nmechanism by which to identify and protect forested areas in plantation company\nconcession areas.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt is alarming that Wilmar, given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/17241\/rogue-trader-indonesia-deforestation-wilmar-gama\/\">its problematic history<\/a>, continues to fail on\nits commitments to implementing No Deforestation. Instead of demonstrating real\nprogress to end fires and deforestation in its supply chains, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmar-international.com\/docs\/default-source\/default-document-library\/sustainability\/statement---concerns-on-hcsa-governance_2apr20.pdf?sfvrsn=f4c63e1e_6\">has chosen to quit<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmar-international.com\/docs\/default-source\/default-document-library\/sustainability\/statement---concerns-on-hcsa-governance_2apr20.pdf?sfvrsn=f4c63e1e_6\"> and criticise HCSA<\/a>.\u201d said Grant Rosoman, Global Forests Solutions Senior\nAdvisor for Greenpeace International.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cNow more than ever we need business to\nsupport tools that stop deforestation such as HCSA given that scientists have\nreported that deforestation and habitat destruction can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/destroyed-habitat-creates-the-perfect-conditions-for-coronavirus-to-emerge\/\">create the conditions for <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/destroyed-habitat-creates-the-perfect-conditions-for-coronavirus-to-emerge\/\">pandemics such as COVID-19<\/a>, as well\ncontributing to the climate emergency and biodiversity crisis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n<p>Wilmar has exited from being a member of the HCSA, having failed to provide evidence that it was actively implementing HCSA <sup>[1]<\/sup>. HCSA is a tool for implementing no deforestation in supply chains. It is included in the Round Table for Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification standards, is being adopted by key palm oil, pulp and paper, rubber and cocoa producers globally, and is supported by the UN Environment Programme, the EU and the French government.<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n<p>In recent years Greenpeace International has repeatedly exposed Wilmar\u2019s links to deforestation and fires via its suppliers <sup>[3]<\/sup> and stopped talks with Wilmar in September 2019 due to its lack of progress on supply chain transformation and transparency.<sup>[4]<\/sup> <\/p>\n\n<p>At the end of 2018 Greenpeace International filed an objection against Wilmar being re-appointed as co-chair of HCSA Executive Committee unless it met the HCSA membership requirements.
