{"id":64398,"date":"2023-12-27T17:37:43","date_gmt":"2023-12-27T10:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/?p=64398"},"modified":"2026-04-08T14:05:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T07:05:35","slug":"2023-a-year-in-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/story\/64398\/2023-a-year-in-review\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 in Review"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It has been a busy and action-packed year for Greenpeace Southeast Asia. <br><br>As we bid farewell to another remarkable year, let&#8217;s take a moment to cherish the memories, acknowledge the milestones, and celebrate the collective journey we\u2019ve been on.<br><br>In 2023, we saw thousands of people coming together for environmental protection and demanding systemic changes necessary for a livable and more sustainable Southeast Asia, especially as many ASEAN nations held their respective national elections in 2023.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-southeastasia-stateless\/2023\/12\/8d467609-sinking1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-southeastasia-stateless\/2023\/12\/8d467609-sinking1.jpeg 1000w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-southeastasia-stateless\/2023\/12\/8d467609-sinking1-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-southeastasia-stateless\/2023\/12\/8d467609-sinking1-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-southeastasia-stateless\/2023\/12\/8d467609-sinking1-510x340.jpeg 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bangkok\u2019s 29th District landmark, located in the Bang Khun Thian mangrove forest, is now under water due to rising sea levels. Flooding has also affected other parts of the Thai capital. \u2063Right before the national elections, GreenpeaceThailand called on Thai political parties to prioritise the climate agenda to protect citizens from extreme weather impacts.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Climate issues, particularly the region&#8217;s alarming air pollution levels, were a main concern, prompting concerned citizens and like-minded NGOs to file<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/press\/61319\/thai-court-rules-on-prtr-implementation-to-be-carried-out-by-industry-ministry\/\"> a civil lawsuit against government agencies in Thailand<\/a>. It is the first in a series of Art Interventions in a collaboration between Greenpeace Malaysia and Splash and Burn, to reignite the conversation on solutions to the issue of transboundary haze and clean air as a human right, following the filing of a complaint to the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM); and a call to action for stronger action by our government to hold polluters accountable.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 Wei Ming \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>People-power was very much evident throughout 2023. their ground and fight for their rights to protect their <\/a>coastal homeland from being converted into an industrial zone that will threaten local ecology and their way of life.<\/p>\n\n<figure before the UN climate talks in Dubai, climate-impacted communities in the Philippines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/philippines\/press\/63101\/communities-march-to-shell-terminal-demand-fossil-fuel-industry-to-pay-up-for-climate-loss-and-damage\/\">took to the streets to demand climate justice and reparations from big oil Shell- a corporate polluter<\/a> that has historically contributed and profited from the climate crisis that continue to impact millions of
