Grocery Store Plastic Survey Toolkit
Which grocery stores use the most #PointlessPlastic? Help us collect data to find out!
Thanks for signing up to stop the plastic pollution crisis. We need all hands on deck to push corporations to clean up the mess they have made by producing way, way too much plastic.
Greenpeace is releasing a report card this summer that will rank 20 large supermarket chains on their current and future plastic usage. And we need your help in collecting data that will feed into this ranking! This will mean going to local grocery store chains, and walking around the store examining their usage of plastic.
Supporters like you have already visited hundreds of stores!

We still need more data to include make our survey successful. In order to include your results in our ranking, we need all surveys to be completed by March 22.
Here’s how to get started!
Step 1: find a grocery store
We are putting pressure on the following grocery store chains to maximize our impact. If you live near multiple stores, please prioritize the starred* ones on this list!
- Fresco y Más*
- Giant Eagle*
- Harris Teeter*
- Save Mart
- Trader Joe’s
- Whole Foods
You may need to do some research using GoogleMaps to find out which of these grocery stores has a branch closest to you.
Step 2: text “Plastic” to 877877
On your cell phone, text the word “Plastic” to 877877. It will send you back a link with a survey form to fill out! You’ll be using this survey form when you visit the grocery store.
If you don’t have a smartphone, you can still participate! Take a look at the survey before you go to the store and write down or print out the questions. Bring a camera with you, and when you get home, fill out the survey on your computer and upload your photos.
Step 3: do your store visit!
Go to the grocery store, pull up the survey on your phone (or text “plastic” to 877877 to receive it again), and click submit. Make sure to take lots of photos and upload them into your survey form!
Bonus step: deliver this note to the manager of the store
This step is extra credit! If you’re up for it, print out this note, add your signature, and deliver it to the store manager. This will send a clear message to the store chains we visit, letting them know many people like you want to see them go plastic-free.
