Greenpeace Climate Crime Unit Pursues Oil Billionaire David Koch in New York City

July 6, 2010

Greenpeace’s Climate Crime Unit investigation into oil billionaires David and Charles Koch and their funding of climate denial organizations continued today at the David H Koch Theatre in New York City. Greenpeace’s Climate Crime Unit’s green squad cars were deployed to the Koch Theatre where investigators removed a dead “polar bear” in a Greenpeace emergency vehicle.

“David and Charles Koch have refused to address key questions about their destructive role in funding the climate denial propaganda industry,” said Greenpeace Research Director Kert Davies, “The Koch Brothers can’t keep hiding behind front groups like Americans for Prosperity and the Cato Institute forever.”

The Climate Crime Scene action follows the release last week of Greenpeace’s report, “Koch Industries: Secretly Funding the Climate Denial Machine” (http://www.greenpeace.org/kochindustries).

The Koch Report details the role of oil conglomerate Koch Industries and its owners Charles and David Koch in obstructing clean energy and climate policy by funding climate denial organizations, direct federal lobbying, and PAC spending to support candidates for federal office.  David Koch and his brother Charles Koch are the two principal shareholders of Koch Industries, an oil supply and refining company that is one of the largest private corporations in the US.

Yesterday, Greenpeace delivered a letter to David and Charles Koch seeking a response to unanswered questions and offering an opportunity for the Koch brothers to explain their funding of organizations that distort climate science and oppose climate and clean energy policies.

“Given your interest in an “intellectually honest debate”, are you willing to participate in an open debate at the National Press Club on your role in funding climate denial organizations and think tanks?” asked Davies in the letter, which was delivered to David Koch’s Manhattan office.
