Greenpeace Statement on Trump Administration Rollback of Transgender Protections

February 23, 2017

This week, the Trump Administration rolled back federal protections for transgender students to access to gender-appropriate school facilities, opening the door for states and schools to discriminate against transgender children and youth.

In response, Rachel Rye Butler, Greenpeace USA Democracy campaign specialist, said:

“The Republican administration has now expanded its attacks from immigrants, Muslims, water protectors, and other vulnerable communities to kids trying to use school facilities.

“Respect for human life and dignity goes hand in hand with respect for our environment. Transgender youth, like all children, deserve a safe and healthy learning environment free of discrimination and harassment.

“To the trans youth impacted by this decision, you belong. You are loved. We’re in this together. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out. The trans lifeline can be reached here: http://translifeline.org/.”
