Greenpeace statement on unplanned shutdowns of Vermont Yankee and Indian Point nuclear reactors

November 8, 2010

November 8, Washington DC - In response to Entergy Corporation's announcements of unplanned shutdowns at Vermont Yankee and Indian Point Unit 2 nuclear reactors, Jim Riccio of Greenpeace released the following statement:

“Continued radioactive leaks, fires, and explosions at Entergy’s nuclear plants in Vermont and New York are warnings that it is time to shut down these old reactors,” said Jim Riccio of Greenpeace, “Instead of trying to squeeze more profit out of Vermont Yankee or dump the mess they’ve created onto someone else, Entergy should heed these warnings, behave like a responsible corporate citizen and begin preparations to permanently shut down these unsafe and unnecessary reactors as scheduled.”
