Kavanaugh’s appointment to the US Supreme Court will have lasting repercussions that will harm our environment

In response to the United States confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard said:

“This confirmation is shameful and shows that our democracy is broken. To give someone a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the country who has been credibly accused of a heinous crime, such as sexual misconduct, is an absolute disgrace. This is a sad day for survivors, women, and those who believe in basic human rights and a safe environment for all.

Although Judge Kavanaugh knows that climate change is real, he has repeatedly ruled to limit the EPA’s power to rein in emissions, mitigate global warming, and protect our environment. Our planet is in peril and we need a nonpartisan Supreme Court that will challenge the administration’s rollback on environmental rules.

This appointment puts fundamental protections for the environment, democracy, and women’s rights at risk. Now is the time for everyone to make a plan to vote in the midterms for candidates that support women and survivors, and who will work on behalf of people and the environment. We will not lose hope and will keep fighting together for justice and a future that benefits all.”
