Dear Pieter Heerema,

I call on Allseas to stop backing destructive deep sea mining and immediately cut ties with The Metal Company.

TMC is now attempting to bypass international regulation by submitting a mining licence through the Trump administration. This move makes it clear that its priorities lie with profit \u2014 not with protecting the ocean or the climate.

Continuing to work with TMC bears a reputational and political risk for AllSeas. TMC\u2019s move to work unilaterally with the Trump Administration is a threat to\u00a0 international relations and the governance of our oceans, on which peace and cooperation depend. I call on you to divest from this dangerous relationship immediately.

According to scientists, deep sea mining risks irreversible damage to marine life. It is crucial to protect this last untouched wilderness.\u00a0

Dozens of countries, and major corporations like Google, Samsung, Philips, Volkswagen, BMW and Volvo are supporting a moratorium on deep sea mining. The global call to protect the deep sea is growing louder \u2014 it’s time for Allseas to listen.

Who is Allseas?<\/h3>\n\n

Allseas is a Dutch-Swiss family company and a major enabler of deep sea mining. It built the world’s first and only deep sea mining vessel and is the key partner of Canadian company The Metals Company (TMC). Deep sea mining is currently not allowed in international waters. Scientists warn of the major irreversible harmful effects of this industry. The international consensus is that the International Seabed Authority decides whether and when countries are allowed to mine in the deep sea.<\/p>\n\n

Now, Allseas’ partner TMC is trying to bypass the United Nations process by applying for a mining license through the Trump Administration in the U.S. We cannot allow greedy companies and reckless governments to destroy our oceans for short-term profit.
