{"id":4759,"date":"2015-06-29T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2015-06-29T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www-prod.greenpeace.org\/usa\/citizens-for-a-sound-economy-now-freedomworks\/"},"modified":"2024-11-21T08:53:05","modified_gmt":"2024-11-21T08:53:05","slug":"citizens-for-a-sound-economy-now-freedomworks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/climate\/climate-deniers\/front-groups\/citizens-for-a-sound-economy-now-freedomworks\/","title":{"rendered":"Citizens for a Sound Economy (disbanded &#8211; now FreedomWorks)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class='p4subtitle'>Koch Industries Climate Denial Front Group<\/span><br \/><span class='p4descriptive_paragraph'>$6,510,375 from Koch foundations, 1997-2002, + $1,750,000 from David Koch + $1,702,500 from Koch Industries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.exxonsecrets.org\/html\/orgfactsheet.php?id=27\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE)<\/a> was founded by Koch Industries executives David Koch and Richard Fink in 1984, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Citizens_for_a_Sound_Economy\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">split in 2003<\/a> into Americans For Prosperity\u00a0(formerly the CSE Foundation) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/old.mediatransparency.org\/story.php?storyID=40\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FreedomWorks<\/a>\u00a0(formerly CSE).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to funds from Koch family foundations (see table below), researchers and reporters have found examples of\u00a0large,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/david-koch-seeded-major-tea-party-group-private-115102732--politics.html?ref=gs\">undisclosed grants from Koch Industries and David Koch<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>This $4,978,000 sum\u00a0is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> included in the table\u00a0below of Koch foundation spending:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1998: $750,000 from David Koch; $626,500 from Koch Industries. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citizen.org\/documents\/Citizens%20for%20a%20Sound%20Economy%20Report.pdf\">Public Citizen, 2000<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>2001: $1,000,000 from David Koch; $952,500 from Koch Industries (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/david-koch-seeded-major-tea-party-group-private-115102732--politics.html?ref=gs\">National Journal, 2013<\/a>)\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/170587284\/Citizens-for-a-Sound-Economy-Educational-Fund-Schedule-B-2001\">CSE&#8217;s list of donors<\/a> for the IRS\u00a0indicates an additional $750,000 from Koch Industries, 2001<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>FreedomWorks is led by former U.S. Representative Dick Armey, with a mission of promoting a conservative agenda.<\/p>\n<p>After its estrangement from the Koch family, Freedomworks opposed <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090204220142\/http:\/\/www.freedomworks.org\/issues\/global-warming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the need for climate legislation<\/a>, declaring: &#8220;organizations pushing action on global warming &#8211; such as the\u00a0United Nations, the environmental movement, and former Vice President Al Gore &#8211; have substantial institutional, ideological, and financial stakes in creating a restrictive new layer of global warming regulation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>FreedomWorks\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedomworks.org\/tags\/climate-gate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">participated in the echochamber<\/a> around the &#8220;ClimateGate&#8221; story, a coordinated public relations effort to discredit several climate scientists.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/secureusa.greenpeace.org\/convio\/koch_funding.php?o=17\" width=\"600\" height=\"1000\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Koch Industries Climate Denial Front Group$6,510,375 from Koch foundations, 1997-2002, + $1,750,000 from David Koch + $1,702,500 from Koch Industries.
