Koch is the oil and gas industry&#8217;s top lobbying spender, one of the top polluters, a massive funding source to climate-denial front-groups, and major force fighting against clean energy policies. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"leader\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210225032222\/http:\/\/polluterwatch.org\/charles-koch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Koch<\/a> has controlled Koch Industries since inheriting the company from his father, Fred Koch, Sr., when he died in 1967. Previously known as Rock Island Oil &amp; Refining Co., the company was renamed Koch Industries, Inc (KII) after Fred Koch. <em>(Charles Koch, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Science of Success<\/span>, John Wiley &amp; Sons, 2007, pp.9-12)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For most of Koch Industries\u2019 history, one of Charles Koch\u2019s three brothers, the late <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210827142316\/http:\/\/polluterwatch.org\/david-koch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Koch,<\/a> co-owned the company and worked as a senior executive.<\/p>\n<p>David Koch\u2019s twin brother, Bill Koch, worked for Koch Industries until 1983, when he was forced out of company for trying to overthrow Charles Koch and seize control of the company. Bill Koch\u2019s shares of the company were sold for approximately $470 million, which only appeased the younger Koch twin for two years.<\/p>\n<p>In 1985, Bill Koch had convinced the eldest of the four Koch brothers, Frederick \u201cFreddie\u201d Koch, that their shares in the family company had been undervalued by Charles Koch. Bill and Freddie Koch initiated a series of lawsuits against Koch Industries and Charles Koch that lasted from 1985-1998 <em>(Christopher Leonard, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Kochland<\/span>, Simon &amp; Schuster, pp. 118-119, 131, 145, 208)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Charles and David Koch became known as \u201cthe Koch brothers\u201d in political circles, as their involvement in politics escalated, using the company as the financial engine and coordinating body. Charles Koch continues to coordinate the spending of his personal fortune with other business executives to bankroll political operations implemented by a wide web of organizations, most of which are affiliated through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/state-policy-network-spn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State Policy Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Greenpeace Koch Brothers Climate Criminals banner\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/8415430f-koch-bros-banner.jpeg\" alt=\"Greenpeace Koch Brothers Climate Criminals banner\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"listings\">\n<h2 id=\"a0\">Koch Industries Facts<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Koch Industries is owned and controlled by <strong>Charles G. Koch<\/strong>. According to 2014 Forbes rankings, the Koch brothers are tied for <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/billionaires\/list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sixth richest person in the world<\/a> at <strong>$41.3 billion each<\/strong>\u2013more than Michael Bloomberg, George Soros and Jim and Alice Walton of Wal-Mart fortune. <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/bloomberg.com\/billionaires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloomberg<\/a> estimates of each brothers\u2019 wealth currently exceed $52 billion.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/koch-industries-more-info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koch Industries has many subsidiaries<\/a>, operating in oil and gas exploration, pipelines and refining, in chemical and fertilizer production, in trading both physical fossil fuel products as well as commodity futures and derivatives, cattle and game ranching, forestry and timber products, electronics, industrial glass and various consumer products. <strong>Koch Companies Public Sector <\/strong>oversees Koch\u2019s lobbying, political activities and aggressive public relations.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/koch-industries-environmental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koch Industries\u2019 environmental record<\/a> includes a <strong>$30 million federal fine for Koch\u2019s role in 300 oil spills<\/strong> that resulted in more than three million gallons of crude oil into waterways, a $1.7 million federal penalty in 2009 for environmental violations at facilities in seven states, and ongoing pollution from Koch operations around the country.<\/li>\n<li>Koch Industries entered into a <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110306213748\/http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2000\/11\/27\/60II\/main252545.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">$25 million settlement<\/a> with the US government in May 2001, after estranged brother Bill Koch revealed that Koch <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/indiancountrytoday.com\/archive\/money-koch-bros-stole-from-tribes-could-swing-mid-term-elections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stole over 5 million barrels of oil from federal land and native peoples\u2019 reservations<\/a>. The value of oil that Bill Koch accused Koch Industries of stealing was worth $133 million \u2013 over $255 million in 2014 dollars.<\/li>\n<li>In 2013, <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/dark-money-groups-pay-1-million-dollars-in-fines-in-california-case\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">political groups controlled by the Kochs were fined $1.5 million<\/a> by the state of California for illegally funneling money to support ballot initiative campaigns without proper disclosure. This scandal revealed a vast network created and run by Koch Industries executives and lawyers that is used to influence political issues and elections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listings\">\n<h2 id=\"a1\">Major Oil &amp; Gas Political Influence<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Koch Industries and top employees have spent over $22 million<\/strong> on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/koch-pac-funding-of-federal-po\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contributions to federal political candidates<\/a> since 1999, more than any other oil-and-gas sector PAC. In any given year, 84% to 98% of this money went to Republican candidates.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/koch-direct-lobbying-expenditu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koch Industries direct federal lobbying<\/a> expenses exceed $79 million <\/strong><strong>since 1998,<\/strong>when disclosure became mandatory. Koch\u2019s lobbying expenses are outspent only by a few oil and gas industry \u201csupermajor\u201d competitors that have far greater annual revenue than Koch Industries: <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/influenceexplorer.com\/organization\/exxon-mobil\/819555dfc3d449d2be54286f0cb385e2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>ExxonMobil<\/strong><\/a> ($192 million), <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/influenceexplorer.com\/organization\/royal-dutch-shell\/72bef181f3fd4ef69f4eb2f9ec5b8566\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Dutch Shell<\/a> ($188 million), <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/influenceexplorer.com\/organization\/bp\/6677c9b020c94e25b05168fe3e6e8aa2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BP<\/a> ($171 million) <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/influenceexplorer.com\/organization\/chevron-corp\/ad060fd499a245368a7744522b79b2c2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chevron<\/strong><\/a> ($105 million), and <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/influenceexplorer.com\/organization\/conocophillips\/ec99d2a459384f0f8c2af3400f720d4e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>ConocoPhillips<\/strong><\/a> ($91 million).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"listings\">\n<h2 id=\"a2\">Koch\u2019s Funding to Deny Climate Change Solutions<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Since 1997, Koch foundations have provided over $145.5 million in funding to climate denial groups; <strong>ExxonMobil<\/strong> provided about $37.7 million to climate denial organizations over the same period. Through \u201c<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/mojo\/2013\/02\/donors-trust-2011-dark-money-heritage-cato-unions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dark Money ATMs<\/a>\u201d like DonorsTrust, it is likely that the Kochs have obscured millions of additional dollars to the same organizations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Americans for Prosperity Foundation<\/strong> (AFP), founded and chaired by David H. Koch, received over $5.7 million from Koch foundations since 2005. AFP is known for its <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/4024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cHot Air Tour\u201d<\/a> and\u201cRegulation Reality Tour\u201d campaigns that spreads misinformation about climate science and policy.<\/li>\n<li>Koch Industries and the front groups it finances have <strong>attacked state-level climate and clean energy laws. <\/strong>Numerous Koch-funded organizations and people have pushed to repeal clean energy incentives in states like Kansas, Ohio and <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.energyandpolicy.org\/north-carolina-renewable-energy-standard-fight-in-2013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Carolina<\/a>, among over a dozen<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.energyandpolicy.org\/renewable-energy-state-policy-attacks-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">other states<\/a>. Koch subsidiaries supported the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/CASE-STUDY-Koch-Industries-Backs-California-Proposition-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California ballot Proposition 23<\/a> in 2010. Koch and its surrogate organizations continue efforts to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/CASE-STUDY-Koch-Front-Groups-Attack-RGGI--the-Northeast-Regional-Greenhouse-Gas-Initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pull northeastern states out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Multiple Koch-funded organizations have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/case-study-the-koch-funded-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repeatedly rebroadcasted<\/a> the November 2009 story dubbed \u201cClimateGate,\u201d referring to stolen personal emails of climate experts. These organizations claim the emails prove a \u201cconspiracy\u201d of scientists and casts doubt on the scientific consensus regarding climate change.<\/li>\n<li>In 2007, several prominent climate denial scientists published a non-peer reviewed article, funded by a Koch foundation, that <strong>concluded polar bears were not threatened by global warming<\/strong>. Multiple Koch-funded groups reiterated the article\u2019s conclusions through their websites and other media outlets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"a3\" class=\"listings\">Coordinated Outside Political Spending<\/h2>\n<p>Since 2003, Charles Koch has convened twice-annual <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/politics\/2010\/10\/20\/124642\/beck-koch-chamber-meeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meetings<\/a> for select business executives, politicians, lobbyists, judges and journalists to strategize and fund political campaigns for large business interests. Attendees of these \u201c<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2013\/02\/koch-world-reboots-87834.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KochWorld<\/a>\u201d meetings <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/mojo\/2011\/09\/koch-brothers-million-dollar-donor-club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pledge their own money<\/a> to fund a network of political organizations working to limit the power of public employee unions, resist healthcare expansion, push pension reforms, privatize schools, and oppose environmental laws. <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/koch-backed-political-network-built-to-shield-donors-raised-400-million-in-2012-elections\/2014\/01\/05\/9e7cfd9a-719b-11e3-9389-09ef9944065e_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Kochs raised $400 million dollars to influence the 2012 elections<\/a>, funneling hundreds of millions of dollars through a <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/graphics\/koch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">complex network of nonprofit organizations and limited liability corporations <\/a>controlled by Koch operatives.<br \/>\n<strong>Track funding to climate denial front groups from Koch foundations:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/secureusa.greenpeace.org\/convio\/koch_funding.php?o=4\" width=\"600\" height=\"920\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em><em>See also PolluterWatch profiles of\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/polluterwatch.com\/koch-industries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koch Industries<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/polluterwatch.com\/charles-koch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Koch<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/polluterwatch.com\/david-koch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Koch<\/a>.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Koch Industries is the second largest private corporation in the country, with $115 billion in annual revenue.
