Climate Change Denial in Koch-Friendly Media<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"a0\">The Kochtopus Media Network (April, 2011)<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110511151341\/http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/20\/beck-koch-chamber-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Aspen meeting<\/a> occurred in June, 2010, four months before the memo was revealed. Many of the elite attendees represented at this meeting alone provide the Koch network with tremendous propaganda power through their ownership positions and ties to <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110511151341\/http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/20\/beck-koch-chamber-meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">major media outlets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Koch influence on this sector of media outlets is particularly apparent in their repeated publication of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160701232050\/http:\/\/www.kochfacts.com\/kf\/\">articles defending Koch Industries<\/a> from increased public scrutiny over the last year, especially following the Aspen meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the attendees with major media influence in Aspen were:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Glenn Beck<\/strong> \u2014 Fox News and talk radio program host.<\/p>\n<p>Beck was a featured speaker at the secret Koch Industries meeting in Aspen. Shortly afterwards, Beck credited <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/blog\/201006290072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charles Koch<\/a> during a segment of his show mocking an Al Gore presentation of climate trends. Glenn Beck has also worked in cooperation with <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.americansforprosperity.org\/083110-weekend-remember-glenn-beck-and-afp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Americans for Prosperity (AFP)<\/a> to coordinate Tea Party rallies and provide material for <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.glennbeck.com\/content\/show\/2010-03-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his broadcasts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/americansforprosperity.org\/081310-glenn-beck-calls-out-president-obama-his-attack-afp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Beck publicly defended<\/a> AFP on air after President Obama\u2019s characterized the group as a front for \u201c<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.alternet.org\/speakeasy\/2010\/08\/20\/americans-for-prosperity-offers-bushotel-packages-for-glenn-beck-lincoln-memorial-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a big oil company<\/a>.\u201d Americans for Prosperity has received over $5.6 million from Koch foundations in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.wsj.com\/person\/M\/stephen-moore\/5675#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stephen Moore<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> editorial board member and senior economics writer and former President of the Club for Growth.<\/p>\n<p>Moore has ties to the <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myheritage.org\/events\/dinner-with-stephen-moore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heritage Foundation<\/a> and the <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cato.org\/people\/stephen-moore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cato Institute<\/a>, two of the top Koch beneficiaries, and was a <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/old.nationalreview.com\/masthead\/masthead-moore.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>National Review<\/em><\/a> magazine contributing editor.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u2019s opinion section serves as a podium for prominent skeptics with ties to the Kochtopus, such as Bjorn Lomborg, <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704448304575196802317362416.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Lindzen<\/a> and <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704075604575356611173414140.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patrick Michaels<\/a>. Michaels, the champion denier of the Cato Institute and other Koch-backed institutions, used the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u2019s opinion section to continue pushing \u201cclimategate\u201d even after scientists were exonerated by formal investigations. Michaels himself is<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/2011\/jan\/25\/michaels-climate-sceptic-misled-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> coming under scrutiny<\/a> for being dishonest during a 2009 Congressional testimony about the funding he receives from the oil industry.<\/p>\n<p>Between moving to the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> and being forced out of the Club for Growth, Moore founded the <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/07\/08\/politics\/08club.html?_r=1&amp;ex=1278475200&amp;en=743088c03a7a3614&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Free Enterprise Fund<\/a> with Arthur Laffer and Mallory Factor, both former Club for Growth directors. Arthur Laffer\u2019s Laffer <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thelaffercenter.com\/board-of-directors.da\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Global Economic Growth<\/a> is tied to Koch Industries through its Vice Chairman, <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Richard_Fink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Fink<\/a>, and <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Wayne_Gable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Executive Director Wayne Gable<\/a>, both prominent Koch executives, and a $100,000 grant from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Moore is also a frequent commentator on <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/15840232\/?video=1765058273&amp;play=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC\u2019s Kudlow &amp; Co <\/a>and Fox News\u2019 On the Record with<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/3955572\/death-and-taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greta van Susteren<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philip Anschutz<\/strong> \u2014 Owner of the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, the <em>San Francisco Examiner<\/em>, Examiner.com and the <em>Weekly Standard<\/em>, via <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/investing.businessweek.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/people.asp?privcapId=20346059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clarity Media Group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Philip Anschutz, CEO of the Anschutz Corporation, has served on the boards of both the American Petroleum Institute and the National Petroleum Council and has ties to <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/investing.businessweek.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/person.asp?personId=310082&amp;privcapId=932266&amp;previousCapId=20346059&amp;previousTitle=Clarity%20Media%20Group,%20Inc.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Union Pacific Railroad and Forest Oil<\/a>. He owns the<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/denver\/stories\/2002\/10\/07\/daily39.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Oil &amp; Gas Asset Clearinghouse<\/a> industry auction house. Anschutz founded telecommunications company Qwest, owns the Regal Entertainment theater chain and NRC broadcasting, which operates a string of <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/magazines\/fortune\/fortune_archive\/2004\/06\/28\/374403\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">radio stations in Colorado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anschutz\u2019s Clarity Media Group has played a flagship role in standing up for the billionaire Kochs over the last year. Since the Aspen meeting, pro-Koch publications from both <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/blogs\/examiner-opinion-zone\/defense-koch-and-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Examiner.com<\/a> and the<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/blogs\/beltway-confidential\/new-yorker-s-shameful-attack-conservative-philanthropists-charles-and-davi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Weekly Standard<\/em><\/a> have been featured on Koch Industries\u2019 <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kochind.com\/kochFacts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cKoch Facts\u201d webpage<\/a>, created to dismiss allegations of Koch\u2019s various unsavory business practices. Clarity\u2019s outlets also published articles attacking Greenpeace after our March, 2010 release of <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/environmental-policy-in-national\/global-warming-greenpeace-abandons-reality-lies-libel-and-scummy-behaviour-are-more-fun-i-guess\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Koch Industries: Secretly Funding the Climate Denial Movement<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/paranoid-style-liberal-politics_555525.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The <\/a><em><a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/paranoid-style-liberal-politics_555525.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Weekly Standard<\/a>,<\/em> which published a lengthy defense of the Koch brothers in March, 2011, has also been a promoter of so-called \u201c<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/Content\/Public\/Articles\/000\/000\/017\/310ckjfm.asp?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climategate<\/a>\u201d emails. <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/Content\/Public\/Articles\/000\/000\/013\/275tmktp.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The magazine<\/a> has served as a platform for prominent career climate skeptics <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Steven_F._Hayward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Hayward <\/a>and <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/sourcewatch.org\/index.php?title=Kenneth_Green\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenneth Green<\/a> of the Koch-funded American Enterprise Institute (AEI).<\/p>\n<p>Forbes estimates that Anschutz is the <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/philip-anschutz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">34<sup>th<\/sup> richest American<\/a>, just above Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, with a net worth of seven billion dollars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charles Krauthammer<\/strong> \u2014 <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/linkset\/2005\/03\/24\/LI2005032401690.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Washington<\/em><em>\u00a0Post<\/em><\/a>\u00a0sydicated columnist, pundit and contributor to the<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/author\/charles-krauthammer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Weekly Standard<\/em><\/a> and <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/CharlesKrauthammer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Town Hall Magazine<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Krauthammer is a fervent <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/2011\/02\/10\/charles-krauthammer-global-warming-is-a-religion-gore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climate obstructionist<\/a> who refers to global warming as a \u201creligion,\u201d and more broadly claims that \u201cscientists are flip floppers, constantly changing their theories.\u201d Krauthammer focuses on vilifying environmentalists and political icon <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/2011\/02\/10\/charles-krauthammer-global-warming-is-a-religion-gore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Gore<\/a>, rather than debating actual <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/climateprogress.org\/2008\/06\/01\/krauthammer-part-2-the-real-reason-conservatives-dont-believe-in-climate-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">climate scientists<\/a>, in attempts to cast doubt upon the science of global warming. His disregard for accurate climate science is demonstrated by his references to <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2008\/05\/29\/AR2008052903266.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Czech President Vaclav Klaus<\/a>. Klaus, a notorious climate science denier, was a keynote speaker at the 2009 International Conference on Climate Change. This event, run by the Heartland Institute, was a who\u2019s who of career skeptic scientists and pseudo-experts for hire, <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heartland.org\/events\/NewYork09\/sponsorships.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">working for institutions <\/a>heavily funded by Koch foundations and ExxonMobil, among other polluters and <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/denial-a-palooza-4th-international-conference-climate-change-heartland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">associated foundations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Barone<\/strong> \u2014 Resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, paid Senior Political Analyst for the <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2010\/10\/23\/koch-meeting-journalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Washington Examiner<\/em><\/a>, and Fox News commentator.<\/p>\n<p>Barone was formerly a senior writer with <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>, an outlet that has come to the<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/opinion\/blogs\/peter-roff\/2011\/02\/03\/liberal-medias-focus-on-the-koch-brothers-is-also-about-intimidation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kochs\u2019 defense<\/a>, and a member of the <em>Washington Post<\/em> editorial board. Barone is also the principal coauthor of the <em>Almanac of American Politics<\/em>, published annually by the <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aei.org\/scholar\/128\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Journal Group<\/a>. The American Enterprise Institute, which has received $150,000 from Koch foundations and over $2.8 million from ExxonMobil since 1997, has used its <em>American<\/em> blog since the Aspen meeting to defend <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.american.com\/?p=19050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Koch Industries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timothy Carney<\/strong> \u2014 Lobbying editor and senior <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/people\/timothy-p-carney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">political columnist<\/a> for the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>and author of <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/timothypcarney.blogspot.com\/p\/obamanomics-how-barack-obama-is.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Obamanomics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Carney has written articles <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/politics\/left039s-double-standard-kochs-and-soros\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">specifically justifying<\/a> his presence at the Koch meeting in Aspen, using them to defend the private conglomerate. Despite shielding the Koch brothers in his writing, Carney claims to have spoken at the Aspen meeting on, \u201cthe evils of corporate welfare and bailouts, and the destructive influence of the<a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/blogs\/beltway-confidential\/2010\/10\/big-business-koch-and-free-markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Big Business lobby in Washington<\/a>.\u201d Koch Industries has spent over $49 million on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/polluterwatch\/koch-industries\/koch-direct-lobbying-expenditu\/\">federal lobbying since 2006<\/a>. Carney also disclosed that he has been paid by the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS) for speaking events. The George Mason University-based IHS received over $2.4 million from the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Carney\u2019s writing often promotes <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/2009\/04\/new-chamber-index-shows-conservatives-arent-corporate-pawns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senator James DeMint (R-SC)<\/a>, one of the Kochs\u2019 favorite Senators, who has also attended Koch Industries strategy meetings and has received at least $76,000 from the Kochs and company PAC since 2004 (see April 2011 Report, pg. 21). Koch Charitable Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arthur Brooks<\/strong> \u2014 President and Director of the American Enterprise Institute (AEI).<\/p>\n<p>Brooks\u2019 influence as the <a class=\"zoom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arthurbrooks.net\/arthur-in-the-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">head of AEI <\/a>leads to frequent media exposure, including through other outlets financed by Koch Foundations (the <em>American Spectator<\/em> and the Reason Foundation) or tied to Koch through other attendees at the Aspen meeting (<em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>editorials, <em>National Review<\/em>, and <em>Daily Caller<\/em>).
