The good news is people around the world are moving away from dirty, polluting coal in favor of clean, renewable, affordable energy. Right now, we have the chance to quit coal for good and keep remaining U.S. coal reserves in the ground. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure class='wp-block-image size-large p4featured_image'><img src='https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/ee565631-gp048ty_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg' alt='Lausitz Brown Coal Plants' \/><figcaption class='wp-element-caption'><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All around the world, people are mobilizing against coal and making serious progress. In 2016, the Obama administration took a huge step in the right direction by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/president-obamas-big-coal-leasing-moratorium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">halting all new coal mining leases on public lands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and initiating an overhaul of the federal coal leasing program. This move alone will keep billions of tons of coal in the ground. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the climate deniers in Congress have promised to move us backwards. Here\u2019s why we must resist their attacks on climate progress and quit coal for good. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Coal Fuels the Climate Crisis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impacts of the climate crisis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around the world are increasingly clear: <strong>we urgently need to end our reliance on fossil fuels<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coal is the single largest contributor to global warming. Currently, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/publications\/Campaign-reports\/Climate-Reports\/Point-of-No-Return\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-third<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of all global carbon dioxide emissions come from burning coal. Additionally, scientists are increasingly clear that in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, we need to leave <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v517\/n7533\/full\/nature14016.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">80 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of global carbon deposits \u2014 like coal \u2014 in the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up until very recently, the U.S. government was more than ready to give away our public land to coal companies. Between\u00a02009 and 2015, the federal government sold more than <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/en\/campaigns\/global-warming-and-energy\/The-Problem\/Coal\/Greenpeace-Leasing-Coal-Fueling-Climate-Change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.2 billion tons of our coal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, unlocking more than 3.9 billion metric tons of carbon pollution. That&#8217;s the equivalent to the emissions of more than 825 million cars on the road for a year,\u00a0and more than the 3.7 billion tons that was emitted in the entire European Union in 2012. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, recent changes to the federal coal leasing program have put a stop to that for the time being. But there\u2019s still much more we can do to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep dirty fossil fuels in the ground<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0for good and speed up the transition to clean, renewable energy. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Coal Causes Pollution<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s call it like it is \u2014 <strong>coal is dirty<\/strong>. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no way to extract or burn coal without polluting our air, poisoning our water, and threatening human health. And we know this <a href=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/issues\/environmental-justice\/\">pollution disproportionately endangers Black, Brown, Indigenous, and poor communities<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coal-burning power plants contribute to air and water pollution. They create tons of toxic coal ash that ends up in our drinking water. Coal mining, meanwhile, disrupts communities with mountain top removal and strip mines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Historically, the health effects of burning coal are astounding:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollution from coal is linked to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.psr.org\/resources\/coals-assault-on-human-health.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four of the five leading causes of death<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States: heart disease, cancer, stroke, and respiratory diseases. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catf.us\/resources\/publications\/view\/24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36,000 Americans die<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a result of air pollution from coal-fired power plants. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/asthma.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in ten children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United States has asthma.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While significant steps have been taken in recent years to address some of the concerns with coal pollution, burning and extracting coal continues to pose serious threats to our health, our environment and our climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Keep Coal in the Ground<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only way to avoid these health impacts and curb climate change is to keep coal where it belongs \u2014 in the ground. And to do that, our resistance to <strong>politicians&#8217; and corporations&#8217; climate denial<\/strong>\u00a0and their <strong>blatant disregard for environmental justice<\/strong> \u2014 must be relentless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ushering in the end of coal\u2019s stronghold on U.S. energyCoal was once king in the United States, accounting for more than 40 percent of our electricity as recently as 2014.
