Not only do the products themselves contain hazardous chemicals, but the companies that make them routinely pollute our natural resources with their waste. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure class='wp-block-image size-large p4featured_image'><img src='https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/2431e828-gp028b5-detox-china.jpg' alt='Local Woman in Guangdong Province' \/><figcaption class='wp-element-caption'>&#8220;We dont ever dare to open our windows, it stinks too much,&#8221; this woman from Ximei Village tells Greenpeace.  And theres a lot of mosquitos here  big ones, too. Ximei Village is right next to the Xiao Xi river, into which many factories in Gurao, Shantou, discharge their wastewater. In Gurao, where the economy is centered around textile production, Greenpeace has found high levels of industrial pollution and has documented the effects on the community.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Polluting Our Water<\/h2>\n<p>Water\u2014one of our most precious and essential resources\u2014is perhaps the most impacted by industrial polluters.<\/p>\n<p>Discharges or emissions from manufacturing can leak out during production processes, while a product is being used, or ]are emitted after a product is thrown away as trash. That\u2019s when chemicals enter our waterways, where most wastewater treatment plants are not set up to process such toxic chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the chemicals that are produced when goods like clothing or electronics are manufactured are hazardous, and many can do long-term harm far from their source. They can travel long distances and accumulate in food chains, ultimately poisoning our food supply.<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s Time to Detox<\/h2>\n<p>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/campaigns\/detox\/fashion\/about\/\"><b>Detox campaign<\/b><\/a> launched in 2011 to expose the direct links between some of the world\u2019s largest clothing brands, their suppliers and toxic water pollution around the globe. The textile industry relies on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/campaigns\/detox\/fashion\/about\/eleven-flagship-hazardous-chemicals\/\">11 hazardous chemicals<\/a> in particular that we urgently need to eliminate for a toxic-free future.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/campaigns\/detox\/fashion\/about\/\">Learn more about Detoxing the fashion industry<\/a><\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Toxic chemicals are in way more places than they should be\u2014our homes, our clothing and our waterways to name a few.
