Our goal was clear: to show the world the amazingness of the Amazon Reef and why it is important to protect it from the hands of greedy oil giants like French company Total. It has been a long journey, and we knew it wasn\u2019t going to be easy. We needed to be many, we needed to be strong, diverse, and united. And with you, and all the Amazon Reef Defenders around the world, we did it.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 520px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]--><br \/>\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-0-1\" width=\"520\" height=\"292\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Amazon_Reef_Victory_Video_35_GP0STSPSN_For_the_Web-1.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Amazon_Reef_Victory_Video_35_GP0STSPSN_For_the_Web-1.mp4\">https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Amazon_Reef_Victory_Video_35_GP0STSPSN_For_the_Web-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today is a day to celebrate. All of us Amazon Reef Defenders have made history together. The Brazilian environmental agency (Ibama) has finally denied Total the license to drill for oil near the Amazon Reef in Brazil! <strong>This decision sends a powerful message to governments and companies all over the world: the movement to end the age of oil will continue to grow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70384\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70384\" class=\"wp-image-70384 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/84911f11-gp0stqh8p.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-70384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In January, a submarine was launched from the Esperanza ship with the scientist from the Federal University of Para\u00edba Ronaldo Francini Filho and the director of the Greenpeace Oceans Campaign, John Hocevar. Ronaldo took part of the group of scientists who discovered the coral reef at the mouth of the Amazon River. The launch of the submarine involved a large part of the ship&#8217;s crew. Esperanza, one of the three Greenpeace vessels, is in the region of the Amazon river mouth, Amap\u00e1 State, for the campaign \u201cDefend the Amazon Reef. From registering the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/brasil\/blog\/corais-da-amazonia-as-primeiras-imagens-de-um-novo-mundo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first ever images of the Amazon Reef<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/brasil\/blog\/para-defender-os-corais-da-amazonia-ativistas-barram-reuniao-da-total\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crashing a Total meeting with climbers and samba players<\/a>, you were there with us. It\u2019s been fabulous to see us all working together and collectively building such a movement.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70385\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70385\" class=\"wp-image-70385 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/768a9e9f-gp0sts1ni.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-70385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greenpeace activists protest against TOTAL\u2019s plans to drill in Amazon despite recent evidence of Reef and wide biodiversity in the area. Outside, climbers, activists, and volunteers were standing in front of the building, some playing music, some with banners including two strong messages: \u201cSave the Amazon Reef\u201d and \u201cTotal persists, we resist\u201d. \u00a9 Simon Lambert<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Amazon Reef Defenders did what seemed impossible: defeat one of the most powerful companies in the world. But, with scientists and local communities on our side, our diversity, strength, and love for this natural treasure proved that nothing is impossible. This is just the beginning. <strong>We won\u2019t stop until the Amazon Reef is protected for good and until we put an end to the age of oil. And we know we can count on you.
