We teamed up with Earthworks and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Biological Diversity<\/a>&nbsp;(CBD) to document these platforms using an optical gas imaging (OGI) camera. Additionally, emissions of methane \u2014 a greenhouse gas that is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/Features\/MethaneMatters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">84 to 87 times more potent than carbon dioxide<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 have been shown to be a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/early\/2018\/06\/20\/science.aar7204.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significant driver of climate change<\/a>. Both are powerful reasons why we need to halt new oil and gas extraction and ramp down existing projects.&nbsp;Naturally, Donald Trump wants to expand risky, unnecessary oil drilling to all of America\u2019s coasts as part of his push to prop up fossil fuels any way he can. But we also join with hundreds of other organizations to call on California Governor&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/brownslastchance.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jerry Brown to secure his climate legacy<\/a>&nbsp;by taking action to phase out fossil fuel extraction.&nbsp;<strong>Relics of the Oil Age<\/strong>&nbsp;California\u2019s offshore drilling began in the 1950s and 60s but was halted after a catastrophic 1969 oil spill dumped&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-santa-barbara-oil-spill-1969-20150520-htmlstory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean near Santa Barbara<\/a>. The public outcry following the spill helped spur the modern environmental movement, and the state of California has since prohibited any further drilling in state waters, which extend three miles from shore.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maps.fractracker.org\/latest\/?webmap=b53f0872b3594ccb9f9357df9d1bd3fb\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"969\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2025\/01\/993268a0-screenshot-2025-01-15-at-1.56.59\u202fpm.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2025\/01\/993268a0-screenshot-2025-01-15-at-1.56.59\u202fpm.png 969w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2025\/01\/993268a0-screenshot-2025-01-15-at-1.56.59\u202fpm-300x156.png 300w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2025\/01\/993268a0-screenshot-2025-01-15-at-1.56.59\u202fpm-768x399.png 768w, https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2025\/01\/993268a0-screenshot-2025-01-15-at-1.56.59\u202fpm-510x265.png 510w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 969px) 100vw, 969px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n<p>New drilling in federal waters (greater than 3 miles from shore) was also prohibited from 1982 to 2008, but more recently,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/trump-might-have-just-opened-the-california-coast-to-more-oil-drilling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump has threatened to reopen<\/a>&nbsp;California\u2019s waters to oil drilling. Trump has even considered shrinking the size of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/research\/californias-national-marine-sanctuaries-contain-sizable-oil-and-gas-deposits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Marine Sanctuaries along California\u2019s coast<\/a>&nbsp;to make it easier to find the oil that lies beneath their astounding natural biodiversity.&nbsp;The existing offshore oil platforms and leases have continued to produce oil and natural gas in the decades since the spill, but no new projects have been approved. California is currently home to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boem.gov\/Pacific-OCS-Platforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">23 offshore oil platforms in federal waters<\/a>&nbsp;as well as 4 oil platforms and 5 artificial islands&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slc.ca.gov\/Info\/Oil_Gas.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">located in state waters<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 although a few of these sites are not currently producing or are in the process of being shut down.&nbsp;More importantly, oil production is risky and these platforms are&nbsp;<em>old<\/em>. Many of the ones we saw were rusty and clearly showing their age. Earthworks&#8217; optical gas imaging (OGI) camera detected flaring and emissions from several platforms, making visible normally invisible air toxics.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 David McNew \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p><strong>Among the Platforms<\/strong>&nbsp;While the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/about\/shiptour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arctic Sunrise was in Long Beach<\/a>&nbsp;last weekend, we were able to visit and take OGI video of a number of nearby oil sites. These include the THUMS islands located right in Long Beach harbor. These odd-looking artificial islands are covered with palm trees, lights, a perimeter of bushes, and 1960s-style architecture that makes oil derricks look from a distance like fancy resort hotels. Earthworks&#8217; optical gas imaging (OGI) camera detected flaring and emissions from several platforms, making visible normally invisible air toxics.<div class=\"credit icon-left\"> \u00a9 David McNew \/ Greenpeace<\/div><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>The next morning we visited two oil platforms in state waters (Eva and Emmy), and a bit further out from shore, a cluster of four federal platforms (Edith, Ellen, Elly,&nbsp;and Eureka). (Someone was obviously a big fan of alphabetical naming conventions.) State regulators had previously found that Eva\u2019s wellheads showed \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/news\/press_releases\/2018\/offshore-drilling-04-11-2018.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moderate to significant corrosion<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;The crew of the Arctic Sunrise helped us get close enough to these platforms in the ship\u2019s rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs), so that we could make OGI observations. Before sunrise, we visited platform Gilda, off Ventura, CA. These platforms \u2014 named A, B, C, Hillhouse, Henry, Houchin, and Hogan \u2014 were lined up like dominoes parallel to the coast.
