(January 21, 2025) <\/strong>\u2013&nbsp; Today marks the anniversary of the controversial 2010 Supreme Court <em>Citizens United <\/em>ruling. This decision unleashed a flood of corporate money into our political system. It allowed the fossil fuel industry to spend <a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2025\/01\/the-fossil-fuel-industry-spent-219-million-to-elect-the-new-u-s-government\/\">hundreds of millions of dollars<\/a> this election cycle, overwhelmingly with republican candidates, to exert their influence over our democracy.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cBy ruling that unlimited campaign contributions are protected speech, the court freed the fossil fuel industry to strengthen its stranglehold on our economy,\u201d said Folabi Olagbaju, Greenpeace USA\u2019s Democracy Campaign Director. \u201c<em>Citizens United<\/em> has put politicians completely in the pockets of the biggest donors, often the fossil fuel industry, which has no investment in the wellbeing of our fragile blue planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2024\/10\/01\/asheville-climate-haven-flooding-hurricane\/\">flooding in Asheville<\/a>, N.C., Florida\u2019s record-breaking 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/climate-change-made-hurricane-milton-worse-scientists-say-2024-10-11\/\">hurricanes<\/a>, and most recently the tragic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/14\/climate\/los-angeles-fires-worse-global-warming\/index.html\">Los Angeles wildfires<\/a> starkly remind us of the lack of political action on a worsening climate emergency. Politicians are nowhere to be found when it comes to halting this climate crisis and managing the transition away from fossil fuels. Greenpeace USA urges lawmakers to end the corporate capture of our democracy.
