There might be birds flying way, way up there, but we\u00a0can\u2019t see them and then we\u2019ll mess up The Count.<\/p>\n<p>Why do lady cardinals look so sad and boy cardinals look like they are going to a party?<\/p>\n<p>Someone at school said bees are going missing and if we don\u2019t see any more bees, we\u2019re going to go\u00a0missing, too. Is that <i>true<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want to be missing. But if I am, can I be missing with you, Mommy?<\/p>\n<p>What about Daddy? I don\u2019t want Daddy to be missing.<\/p>\n<p>What is camouflage?<\/p>\n<p>If I wear red and stand behind a cardinal, would you still be able to see the cardinal, or would you\u00a0only see me?<\/p>\n<p>But isn\u2019t that scary for the boy cardinal? He can\u2019t camouflage on anything except a red wall.\u00a0Or my red shirt. Lady cardinals are lucky! You can hardly see them.<\/p>\n<p>Mommy, you are like a lady cardinal because you are brown.<\/p>\n<p>Why do you have better camouflage than Daddy?<\/p>\n<p>Right now, I have medium camouflage.<\/p>\n<p>Will I be brown or white when I grow up?<\/p>\n<p>Why do some white people not like brown people?<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry, Mommy, you can hide in the forest from those bad people. You have good\u00a0camouflage.<\/p>\n<p>Can I have good camouflage even though I\u2019m <i>half and half<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>At school we have to hide under our desks in case of bad people. We did that last week.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s called Lockdown! We have to be quiet like what we\u2019re doing now while we wait for birds.<\/p>\n<p>Why are there people who hunt kids?<\/p>\n<p>If hawks are circling around us, does that mean they think one of us might be good to hunt?<\/p>\n<p>Is there a bathroom nearby?<\/p>\n<p>Why is the redbud tree not called a purplebud tree? All the flowers are purple.<\/p>\n<p>Do hummingbirds ever get tired from flying and just want to swim and float in the water\u00a0for a while?<\/p>\n<p>Is there anything for them to snack on when they are flying above the ocean, or do they just snack\u00a0on air and pretend it is a flower?<\/p>\n<p>I think the blue heron is very suspicious. He\u2019s so frozen, I feel bad for the frogs and fish that\u00a0think he is just a bird statue.<\/p>\n<p>If I saw a bunch of turkey vultures looking at the house with their wings out, I would think\u00a0something scary was going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Remember when we watched that lady put a tag on a hummingbird?<\/p>\n<p>I bet he didn\u2019t like that, and when he got to Mexico, the other birds laughed and asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s\u00a0wrong with your ankle?\u201d Remember another lady painted a bird on my face at the festival\u00a0and you made me wash it off at night? I was very sad.<\/p>\n<p>Do birds have eyelids?<\/p>\n<p>Do they ever close them when they fly?<\/p>\n<p>Do they know how to wink at us? Because I think I saw a brown thrasher wink at me last week but I didn\u2019t tell anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Is there a bathroom nearby now?<\/p>\n<p>What happens if there is a bird count when I\u2019m forty and we don\u2019t find any birds?<\/p>\n<p>Will you be missing when I\u2019m forty?<\/p>\n<p>Will you be missing when I\u2019m sixty?<\/p>\n<p>Mommy! What if there were a hundred more green birds in the forest right now, and we just didn\u2019t\u00a0know it? And they were all camouflaged and watching us with our notepads, and we couldn\u2019t\u00a0see them, and they were giggling and telling each other our bird count is all wrong?<\/p>\n<p>Birds don\u2019t giggle.<\/p>\n<p>What if they were winking at each other then?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u2014<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>As we begin this critical new year in the fight against climate change, Greenpeace is giving over space on our channels to authors and artists working within the climate crisis. Acclaimed author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/stories\/lauren-groff\/\">Lauren Groff<\/a>\u00a0prompted artists and thinkers to write essays and art about climate change for us, and so every day this month we\u2019ll have a new piece from that project that addresses, in some form, what it means to create in the midst of this crisis.
