Yet ICYMI:  2018 was also packed full of hard-fought moments (and victories!) for the environment and people power, which are gearing us up for the year to come. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For every dark and tumultuous moment we lived through in 2018 \u2014 and yes, there were many \u2014 it\u2019s important to recognize that on its heels was an equally inspiring occasion that helps remind us why we keep fighting to protect our environment, our communities and our rights time and again. The credit of any victory we&#8217;ve had this year rest largely on the shoulders of passionate Greenpeace volunteers, donors, activists, water protectors, pipeline fighters, petition-signers, protesters, Congress callers, plastic clean-up and brand auditors, supermarket plastic campaigners, and social-media messengers \u2014 all of whom joined us in this extraordinary time to affect change for our environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So here\u2019s a look back at the battles waged, victories won, and the incredible people power that defined 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 390px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]--><br \/>\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-0-1\" width=\"390\" height=\"390\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/GP0STSVAU_For_the_Web.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/GP0STSVAU_For_the_Web.mp4\">https:\/\/prod.greenpeaceusa.info\/usa\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/GP0STSVAU_For_the_Web.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><b>Samsung Dials Into Renewable Energy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After months of people-powered actions around the globe, Samsung accepted our challenge and committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/breaking-samsung-commits-100-renewable-energy-global-protests-greenpeace-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>100% renewable energy in the U.S., Europe,\u00a0and China by 2020<\/strong><\/a><strong>!<\/strong> The announcement came on the heels of our global campaign calling on Samsung to set strong renewable energy goals for its operations and supply chain. Samsung\u2019s new clean energy policy stands to have an enormous impact in reducing the company&#8217;s massive manufacturing footprint, and further establish large IT companies as critical players on the road towards a clean energy future.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70569\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70569\" class=\"wp-image-70569 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/8906f2bf-gp0strigb_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"538\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-70569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greenpeace activists protest for Samsung to commit to using 100% clean energy. The environmental activists hang a 40m2 banner over a Samsung advertisement on the walls of the Berlin Palace that reads: &#8216;Go 100% renewable energy now!&#8217;. The South Korean company that leads the market in mobile communication is also main sponsor for the 2018 Winter Olympics, which should be carried out with clean energy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>Protect Water, Stop Pipelines<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/pipelines-will-not-built\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After hundreds of thousands of you took action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the oil and gas behemoth Kinder Morgan bailed on its tar sands Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion project, selling it off to the Canadian government last spring. Kinder Morgan\u2019s announcement was in response to heavy pressure from Greenpeace and mass protests around the world aimed at keeping the proposed 715-mile pipeline from being built. <strong>Then in August came a huge success for the Indigenous-led pipeline resistance \u2014 a Canadian court overturned the government\u2019s approval of the project.<\/strong> If they want to start the approval process all over again, they will have to consult with the 117 Indigenous groups and First Nations who would be affected by the pipeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/byZz88jhKas\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"byZz88jhKas\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p><b>A Sea of Companies Commit to Phasing Out Single-Use Plastics<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve helped create the explosive movement to protect ocean life from single-use plastic pollution. Consumer giants like Kroger and Ikea, along with foodservice companies like Aramark, Bon Appetit,\u00a0and Sodexo have all committed to significantly reducing single-use plastics across global operations over the next few years. Towns, cities, and counties across the country are banning plastic shopping bags, straws, and cutlery, too. This rapidly growing movement stands to transform the foodservice industry into an active participant in the global movement away from single-use plastic and other throwaway stuff in our food systems. Keep fighting the good fight because it\u2019s working \u2014 <strong>you\u2019ve been so successful at changing the story on plastics that Collins Dictionary made \u201csingle-use\u201d the word of the year!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<lite-youtube style=\"background-image: url('https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/DcpEcngTrOQ\/hqdefault.jpg');\" videoid=\"DcpEcngTrOQ\" params=\"rel=0\"><\/lite-youtube>\n<p><b>A Breakthrough Moment in the Fight Against Deforestation <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After over 1.3 million Greenpeace supporters spoke out for Indonesia\u2019s rainforests and peatlands \u2014 and the orangutans that call these forests home \u2014 the world\u2019s largest palm oil trader, Wilmar International, was moved to take action. Wilmar issued a detailed action plan describing how it will eliminate deforestation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/breakthrough-moment-to-end-deforestation-for-palm-oil\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the 40% of the world\u2019s palm oil it controls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <strong>If Wilmar sticks to its word, it is one step closer to finally eliminating deforestation from its supply chain while potentially having a major impact on the rest of the industry<\/strong>. That said, this is not over by any means \u2014 Greenpeace will be closely watching to make sure Wilmar delivers and consumer companies follow suit.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">ICYMI: Wilmar, the largest palm oil trader on Earth, just published a plan that could break the link between deforestation and palm oil once and for all. \ud83c\udf89<\/p>\n<p>This could be HUGE for the Indonesian rainforest, orangutans, local communities and our climate&#8230; 1\/4 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/otRYnbbO72\">pic.twitter.com\/otRYnbbO72<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Greenpeace USA (@greenpeaceusa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greenpeaceusa\/status\/1073593751875006464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 14, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><b>Krill Baby, Krill <\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our campaign to protect the Antarctic Ocean received unprecedented support of the vast majority of krill fishing companies operating in Antarctic waters. This means that <strong>nearly all krill companies operating in Antarctica have committed to voluntarily stop fishing in huge areas around the Antarctic Peninsula<\/strong>, including \u2018buffer zones\u2019 around breeding colonies of penguins, to protect wildlife. The companies have also pledged to support the scientific and political process for the creation of a network of large-scale marine protected areas in the Antarctic, including areas in which they currently operate. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_70572\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70572\" class=\"wp-image-70572 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/65f145ff-gp0strp2b_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-70572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Greenpeace activists in peaceful protest, displaying a banner saying \u201cProtect the Antarctic\u201d on the Ukrainian krill trawler &#8216;More Sodruzhestva&#8217; in the Bransfield Strait near Greenwich Island, Antarctic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><b>Voting Rights Restored to 1.4 Million People<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of 2018, Florida had disenfranchised more potential voters than any other state, with more than 10% of all potential voters in Florida unable to vote due to felony records.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, Florida\u2019s Amendment 4 went to a vote and asked its citizens if they wanted to return voting eligibility to people who have completed their criminal sentences for most felony convictions \u2014 and they did, <\/span><b>expanding voting rights to 1.4 million people. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amendment 4 was an important step in fixing a broken system. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: Florida just passed Amendment 4, restoring voting rights to 1.4 million people with a past felony conviction. Not only does this repeal one of the country\u2019s worst Jim Crow laws, it\u2019s also the largest expansion in voting rights since the Voting Rights Act. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Mi19hRAAtT\">pic.twitter.com\/Mi19hRAAtT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Public Citizen (@Public_Citizen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Public_Citizen\/status\/1059987387072290816?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 7, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><b>A Win for Tongass National Forest, Alaska<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace Inc and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascwild.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cascadia Wildlands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 Lawsuit against the U.S. Forest Service <\/span><b>stopped 4 massive logging plans <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that would have resulted in clearcutting 1700 + acres in Tongass National Forest in Alaska, Earth&#8217;s largest remaining Temperate Rainforest. The Tongass is an incredibly Carbon-rich forest and logging in the region could have had a serious impact on the deer population \u2014 the main food source of the Alexander Archipelago Wolf. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">WIN for the forests, wildlife, and our climate!!<\/p>\n<p>US Court of Appeals invalidates four logging projects in Alaska&#39;s Tongass National Forest, the nation&#39;s largest national forest. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QlvyyE52QG\">https:\/\/t.co\/QlvyyE52QG<\/a> <a
