We are constantly in the list of top countries when it comes to disasters, corruption, and vulnerable sectors. And yet we are also in the top lists when it comes to social media, wiring money home and connecting to friends and loved ones in general. We have the largest and most extended of families. We\u2019re a people who grow our nests rather than leave them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so I think the defining characteristic of Filipinos is not exactly resiliency, but rather our capacity to love. This is the thing that has kept us going and eventually smiling through the worst challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The writer Sherwin Nuland once <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2015\/01\/02\/sherwin-nuland-what-everybody-needs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cIf you want to talk about what motivates people to keep existing as a community, you\u2019ve got to talk about love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 1: A Mother\u2019s Love<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is true for Ate (which translates to &#8216;big sister&#8217;) Elma, 42, who lived her whole life in the coastal municipality of Alabat until she had\u00a0to relocate due to the impacts of climate change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elma describes herself as a \u201chumble citizen,\u201d subsisting on selling vegetables and fish from her family\u2019s farm and fishing grounds. It was a happy, simple life for her, her husband, and their growing family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then Elma started to see\u00a0the fish catch steeply decline \u2014 something UN scientists <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rappler.com\/science-nature\/specials\/54392-climate-change-new-poor-philippines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have predicted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will continue as Earth\u2019s temperature rises and ocean acidification worsens. This has cut into her family\u2019s ability to make a living, and in turn their children\u2019s health and education. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartbroken but resolute, she and her husband made the choice to move to a nearby island.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50090\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50090\" class=\"size-full wp-image-50090\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/2a30c20c-gp0stommj_web_size_with_credit_line.jpg\" alt=\"Climate Walk in Manila\" width=\"800\" height=\"539\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-50090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Demonstrators participate in the &#8220;Climate Walk: A People&#8217;s Walk for Climate Justice&#8221; in Manila, Philippines in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe decision wasn\u2019t easy, but it was for our children. It became easier when I thought about giving them a better future,\u201d she told me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having seen firsthand the effects of climate change not only on her neighbors but her own children, Elma is now a voice for her community and a leader and mobilizer for climate justice. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Chapter 2: A Daughter Comes Home<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Labeled the deadliest storm on record to ever make landfall anywhere, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/seasia\/ph\/multimedia\/slideshows\/Aftermath-of-Typhoon-YolandaHaiyan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Typhoon Haiyan<\/a> left a trail of broken hearts in its wake three years ago. It certainly did not spare <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2iy-Bmg_tDE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna Sustento<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 25, who lost her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, and her three-year-old nephew Tarin when the typhoon struck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna\u2019s older brother Kuya also survived Haiyan, and she says she feels much closer to him now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe used to fight all the time, but after losing our entire family, our instinct to protect each other and to be there for each other came about so naturally. Tragedy and loss has a way of reminding you of what\u2019s important in the end,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But such clarity and self-regard did not come easily. For a time after the tragedy, Joanna avoided seeing relatives and friends because she did not want to be pitied. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was placed in this awkward position where they didn\u2019t know what to say or how to act around me,\u201d she told me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dealing with pain and guilt and with most of her family gone, Joanna turned to writing for solace. Writing became a conduit for healing, and gave her the chance to organize all her thoughts and feelings amidst the whirlpools of sorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the opportunity came to share her story to the public, she said yes, not yet realizing how much it would change her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI realized that the more I opened myself up to people, the more I told my story, the braver I became,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storytelling became her home. Whether it tested her strength or made her smile, she continues to embrace it to this day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her love story has also broadened to include those outside of her immediate circle. A mindset she admits was not present before Haiyan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBefore, my ambitions were just limited to putting up and operating my own business. I was only thinking of myself, and what I wanted. I didn\u2019t really think of myself as someone who could contribute to the community. My ambitions were limited to only what I thought I could possibly achieve, it was focused on me, and my family\u2019s security alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut when Haiyan happened, I realized that we should dream for something bigger than ourselves. We should remember that we are all connected. Race, religion, culture, and tradition may separate us, but all of us cry over the same things.
