Too many young activists aren\u2019t getting the credit they deserve. Alexandra Dos Santos, 18, explains why it\u2019s time to start taking the youth climate movement seriously. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Young People \u2014 it\u2019s a label I\u2019ve seen used to dismiss an entire generation as hopelessly naive and ignorant.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Young People don\u2019t know how to communicate; they\u2019re always on their phones. The Young People just go with the trends; they don\u2019t think for themselves. The Young People are over-sensitive; I can\u2019t take all of this political correctness. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Last week, we even heard this disparaging attitude from presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in her appearance on <\/span>Meet the Press<\/span><\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI feel sorry sometimes for the young people who, you know, believe this, they don\u2019t do their own research.\u201d<\/h2>\n

In this case, she\u2019s responding to apparent \u2018misinformation\u2019 <\/span>young people like me<\/span> believe about her campaign\u2019s <\/span>ties to the fossil fuel industry<\/span><\/a> and the money she\u2019s taken from <\/span>fossil fuel lobbyists<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

But this isn\u2019t the first time I\u2019ve heard from older voters, especially in this election, that young people are quick to join political and social movements without getting our facts straight. Even outside of the presidential election, I\u2019ve seen the rising number of young people participating in these movements met with comments that belittle our intelligence and preparedness. <\/span><\/p>\n

And it\u2019s certainly happened to me. When I decided to <\/span>stop eating meat for environmental reasons<\/span>, even my own family dismissed it as a fad I would pass through. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI give it a week,\u201d one family member said to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

There seems to be a myth among the adults around me that civic engagement is a trend. While browsing social media comments, I\u2019ve lost count of how many times anonymous accounts have decried The Young People\u2019s lack of gratitude for living in the United States: \u201cYou\u2019ve got it so good here. Stop complaining.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This seems to be a common complaint from older generations: not thanking them for what they have given us. <\/span><\/p>\n

But to young activists, we are honoring all generations by doing work that affects everyone.<\/i><\/h2>\n

That\u2019s why there\u2019s no age specification for the Greenpeace action days that I\u2019ve participated in. We all go out and talk to the public, and my voice matters just as much as someone\u2019s twice my age. Isn\u2019t how that it\u2019s supposed to be in a democracy \u2014 everyone deserves an equal voice?<\/span><\/p>\n

At the pro-democracy rallies I\u2019ve been to in New York \u2014 some of them positioned outside Clinton fundraisers \u2014 we\u2019ve been met with all too familiar dismissal from outsiders looking in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cGo home to mommy, kids,\u201d shouted one \u00a0passerby in Manhattan. \u201cGet a job!\u201d yelled a speeding cab driver. Our chants for Secretary Clinton to \u201csign the pledge\u201d and say no to money from fossil fuel lobbyists were met with glares and eye rolls. <\/span><\/p>\n

These people weren\u2019t shy about decrying our activism. I wonder, though, why they didn\u2019t bother to ask us what we were fighting for.<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s too bad, because what we are fighting for matters just as much for them as it does for us. <\/span><\/p>\n

Greenpeace\u2019s <\/span>democracy campaign<\/span><\/a> is about getting corporate money out of politics and putting the power back in the hands of the people \u2014 people of all ages. The <\/span>Pledge to Fix Democracy<\/span><\/a> was put forward by more than 20 social and environmental groups. Chief among its asks is the promise to reject money from fossil fuel industry lobbyists, executives, and board members. <\/span><\/p>\n

I showed up to the rally outside of Secretary Clinton\u2019s fundraiser last week because I <\/span>had<\/span><\/i> done my research, and I knew that fossil fuel lobbyists have contributed <\/span>more than $1 million<\/span><\/a> to her campaign. <\/span><\/p>\n

Young activists like myself and <\/span>Eva Resnick-Day<\/span><\/a> \u2014 the one who thanked Secretary Clinton for her climate commitments and <\/span>asked if she would further act by rejecting fossil fuel money<\/span><\/a> \u2014 know better than to take words at face value. We want proof in a broken political system that our elected officials will prioritize us over big donors.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think we, The Young People, deserve a bit more credit.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re critical of the status quo, of the corporate interests that have gridlocked our democracy, <\/span>because <\/span><\/i>we\u2019ve done our research. We\u2019re taking action across the country \u2014 including outside of Clinton fundraisers \u2014 <\/span>because <\/span><\/i>the facts tell us that if we don\u2019t act now, we\u2019ll lose our chance to prevent runaway climate change. <\/span><\/p>\n

We haven\u2019t just done our own research, we\u2019re acting on it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to address all the young people who\u2019ve been cut off in conversation, who\u2019ve been ignored on the streets, who\u2019ve been lectured on their privilege and scolded for their ignorance.<\/h2>\n

Your efforts are <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>made in vain. Your ambition to improve an unjust society is <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>an annoyance. It is <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>a trend. If it weren\u2019t for you, news wouldn\u2019t spread as quickly. If it weren\u2019t for you, we\u2019d all go on accepting what we\u2019re given. And if it weren\u2019t for you, we\u2019d remain stagnant in history. <\/span><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t about bending comments like Clinton’s \u2014 comments that undermine our intelligence and place us in cribs and highchairs rather than at podiums and protests. It\u2019s about meeting today\u2019s biggest challenges with our facts ready and our voices strong<\/span><\/p>\n

Now get out there and get criticized.<\/span><\/p>\n
