It is home to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/en\/press\/releases\/2015\/Greenpeace-condemns-Japan-governments-go-ahead-for-Okinawa-military-base-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">262 endangered species<\/a> including blue corals, sea turtles and the very rare <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/greenpeace-investigation-reveals-extensive-dugong-feeding-troughs-near-planned-u-s-military-base-in-okinawa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese dugong<\/a>. But the Japanese government wants to destroy the bay to create two new airstrips for a US military base.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jgJ46Gzkzfk[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>The struggle to <a href=\"https:\/\/secure3.convio.net\/gpeace\/site\/Advocacy?cmd=display&amp;page=UserAction&amp;id=1886&amp;s_src=gpblog&amp;s_subsrc=160126_storiesfromokinawa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protect Henoko Bay<\/a> is reaching a fever pitch. The majority of Okinawa&#8217;s people &#8212; from students to grandparents and the local governor &#8212; have voiced their opposition to the plans. But construction work continues.
