The display, which showcases the wonders of the deep ocean threatened by this industry, will run from July 13\u201319. It coincides with a July 15 meeting of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), the Jamaica-based international organization tasked to protect and regulate the seabed, where a discussion on a moratorium on deep sea mining is on the agenda for the first time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the paucity of science, a pause or moratorium on deep sea mining is supported by<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/deep-sea-conservation.org\/solutions\/no-deep-sea-mining\/momentum-for-a-moratorium\/governments-and-parliamentarians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27 governments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to date, including Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Palau, and the United Kingdom. More than 800 scientists and marine policy experts; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopdeepseabedmining.org\/endorsers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47 business and financial institutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including tech giants and electric vehicle manufacturers Google, Samsung, Volkswagen, Rivian, BMW, and Renault, also support a moratorium. The UN Human Rights Commissioner, International Union for the Conservation of Nature, civil society groups, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/isa-negotiations-deep-sea-mining.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigenous groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Hawai\u2019i and the Pacific at large \u2013 whose lives and livelihoods rely on the ocean \u2013 have also echoed this call.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these concerns, deep sea mining corporation The Metals Company (TMC) intends to be the first to mine the seafloor commercially. The company has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investors.metals.co\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/tmc-announces-corporate-update-expected-timeline-application\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it will submit a deep sea mining license application following the July 15 ISA meeting, even though a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308597X23005006\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mining code is far<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from completion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Jackie Dragon, Greenpeace USA\u2019s <\/b><b>Senior Oceans Campaigner<\/b><b>, said:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeep Sea Mining companies plan to destroy our oceans for profit, despite growing calls for a moratorium, with countries arguing<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we need to listen to science and safeguard the world\u2019s last untouched frontiers. The magnitude of the threat is still not fully understood, but we know that it will irreversibly impact an oceanic area equivalent to the size of the continental U.S. and <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-68921215\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worsen the already critical state of the World\u2019s oceans<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. W<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e won\u2019t stop speaking the truth to these destructive companies, and we will take our message to stop deep sea mining anywhere the industry goes, whether it is an iconic billboard used to raise awareness, taking peaceful action at sea, or a diplomatic meeting in Jamaica.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its recently released <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/149V4LlNgiLx5n4T1xqfwyoR8aMLfVLgc\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 annual report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, TMC acknowledged an array of obstacles that cast a shadow over its operational progress and future viability. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These include uncertainty in sourcing enough and adequate minerals to justify the commercial effort and difficulties in getting market acceptance for certain mineral products due to the negative image of deep-sea mining, particularly due to the impact it will have on biodiversity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TMC is also currently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/robbinsllp.com\/tmc-the-metals-company-inc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under investigation by the <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for misleading investors and faces resistance from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/shipping-giant-maersk-drops-deep-sea-mining-investment-c226df39\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">international investors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/environment\/deep-sea-mining-companies-denied-potential-funding-2416820\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major banks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who have shunned funding for deep-sea mining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Victor Vescovo, a renowned marine explorer and technologist, said:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeep sea mining is really just strip-mining the seafloor. Financially, it\u2019s a long-term bet that battery technology will not significantly shift away from using cobalt and nickel \u2014 even though it already is, and quite dramatically. It doesn\u2019t make good financial sense to invest billions into an untested industry that eviscerates little-understood ecosystems just to add capacity in single-digit percentages to world metals production. Investors really need to exercise caution against falling for this poorly-veiled greenwashing narrative. Technically, economically, environmentally, and even legally, it\u2019s not a sound, risk-adjusted investment.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Dr. Sylvia Earle, the esteemed marine biologist and oceanographer, said: <\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThose marketing myths for <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short-term profit will cost civilization and ocean health permanent devastating loss. In ignorance of knowledge gained in recent decades, mining the deep sea may have seemed appealing. But a new understanding of alternative technologies, insights into the economic realities, the irreversible catastrophic impacts on ocean life, and the weight of moral liability imposed on this generation make further action to mine the deep sea absurdly irresponsible and just plain wrong<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until recently, the industry actively <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/former-u-s-military-and-political-leaders-call-on-senate-to-ratify-law-of-the-sea-87a6d33b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sought investment and political support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promoting seafloor polymetallic nodules as a pivotal resource for electric vehicles, dubbing them a \u201cbattery in a rock.\u201d However, with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueclimateinitiative.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-10\/whitepaper.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evolution of battery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> technology diminishing the necessity for seafloor minerals and a notable decline in metal prices, deep sea mining corporations have strategically pivoted, fervently advocating for deep-sea mining (DSM) as an urgent national security priority, exploiting geopolitical tensions to galvanize industry backing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. House Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Ra\u00fal M. Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Rep. Ed Case (D-Hawaii), along with a dozen House Democrats, have cited the triple planetary crisis of biodiversity loss, climate change, and pollution as they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/democrats-naturalresources.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/grijalva-case-house-democrats-urge-president-biden-to-support-pause-on-deep-sea-mining\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called on President Biden to support a moratorium on deep sea mining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Representatives emphasized the need to take precautions to ensure that robust science informs any movement to begin deep sea mining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July 2023, U.S. Congressman Ed Case (HI-01) introduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/case.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2211#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two measures calling for a moratorium on deep seabed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mining unless and until its consequences are fully understood and an appropriate protective regulatory regime is established. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hawaii Governor Josh Green <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/international\/pacific-news\/521681\/hawaii-bans-seabed-mining\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signed a bill into law last week<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prohibiting the mining, extraction, and removal of minerals from the seabed in all of the state\u2019s marine waters. The bill also prohibits the issuance of any permit for or in connection with the development or operation of any facility or infrastructure associated with the mining, extracting, or removing of minerals from the seabed within state marine waters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Greenpeace Stop Deep Sea Mining campaigner Louisa Casson said:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor too long, Pacific voices have been shut out of rooms where decisions about the ocean are made, even though they would be on the frontline if deep sea mining gets approval. Hawaii\u2019s bold ban on this destructive industry is fantastic news, as millions of people around the world are saying loud and clear that we need to listen to science and the people who have lived by the ocean for centuries.
