Part of the ongoing \u2018Protect the Oceans\u2019 campaign.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Washington, DC (May 31, 2024)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><b>In response to the announcement that the<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/skillings.net\/congress-greenlights-funding-for-deep-sea-mining-eyeing-critical-minerals\/\"><b> U.S. Congress has approved funding for a deep-sea mining project<\/b><\/a><b> to explore the feasibility of securing critical minerals by extracting them from the ocean floors, Arlo Hemphill, Greenpeace USA Oceans Are Life Project Team Lead, said: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeep sea mining has become a match made in hell: greedy corporations and corrupt politicians are trying to get rich off a story that we need to mine the ocean so we can build more bombs. They want to start a new arms race for their own personal gain, so we shouldn\u2019t be surprised by their lack of concern that they need to trash the most pristine ecosystem on earth to do it.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMining the deep sea is not only destructive; it is also extremely expensive. With the rapidly evolving state of battery technology, the industry\u2019s promises are built on shaky grounds. The idea that taxpayers could end up footing the bill for deep sea mining that would only boost world metal production by negligible single digits while also being left to deal with its impacts should be a wake-up call for us all. Chasing short-term profits threatens long-term ocean health and humanity\u2019s future. This industry isn\u2019t just risky\u2014it\u2019s morally indefensible. As long as the U.S. remains noncommittal, mining companies will continue to exploit that uncertainty to seek gullible investors.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the approval of funds, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/congress-to-fund-u-s-deep-sea-mining-project-8c930869?mod=politics_lead_story\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several obstacles remain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before the industry can access them. The amendments must be approved by both the House and Senate before the president can sign them into law. Furthermore, any funds committed to the industry are unlikely to be available before 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the deep seabed is to be used for peaceful purposes and the collective benefit of humankind. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Biden has been silent on this issue, resistance has grown as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/savethehighseas.org\/voices-calling-for-a-moratorium-governments-and-parliamentarians\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over two dozen countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have already said they do not think deep-sea mining should be allowed to proceed at this stage. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopdeepseabedmining.org\/endorsers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Businesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Google, BMW, Volvo, and Renault have all called for a pause, while over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/seabedminingsciencestatement.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800 scientists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/isa-negotiations-deep-sea-mining.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigenous Peoples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Pacific whose lives and livelihoods rely on the ocean, have raised objections. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/shipping-giant-maersk-drops-deep-sea-mining-investment-c226df39\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International investors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/environment\/deep-sea-mining-companies-denied-potential-funding-2416820\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major banks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have also shunned funding for deep-sea mining.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite these objections, Mike Pompeo, Secretary of State under the Trump Administration, recently joined former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/2024.05.29-220051\/https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/the-ex-pm-the-treasure-hunters-and-the-deep-sea-20240514-p5jdlz.html?btis=#selection-3589.102-3589.143\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new venture to raise capital for deep sea mining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The two former politicians, both censured for ethics violations by their governments, are cashing in on the long-standing revolving door between political office and the private sector.
