The projections urge negotiators to act and finalise the strongest Treaty possible.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Washington, DC <\/b><b>(April 19, 2024) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013In response to the Biden-Harris Administration\u2019s announcement today that the United States has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/ceq\/news-updates\/2024\/04\/19\/biden-harris-administration-launches-conservation-gov-showcasing-and-supporting-the-rapid-acceleration-of-locally-led-efforts-to-conserve-protect-and-restore-lands-and-waters-across-america\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already \u201cconserved\u201d almost one-third of its marine areas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> Arlo Hemphill, Greenpeace USA Oceans are Life Project Lead, said: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a disappointing display of creative accounting, one that not only misleads the public but also perpetuates a failed status quo that falls short of the scientific imperative to protect our oceans, allow them to recover, and secure a livable planet. The fact is that NOAA has done practically nothing to advance America\u2019s progress toward the 30 by 30 target since President Biden announced the greatest conservation agenda of any president ever.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAfter an outcry from the public, the U.S. became a champion for a strong Global Ocean Treaty and was among the earliest signatories. We urge the Biden Administration to uphold its commitment and ensure that the U.S. continues to lead on this issue by moving quickly to expand the network of ocean sanctuaries and monuments. Instead of claiming that the U.S. has already met its goal to protect 30% of our waters, NOAA should be working to deliver on President Biden\u2019s plan to expand the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, declaring the Chumash Heritage region a National Marine Sanctuary, and working with regional fishery management councils to establish a representative network of fully protected areas.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With very few exceptions, the protected areas acknowledged in the current Atlas existed prior to Biden\u2019s 30\u00d730 commitment. However, not all are protected against extractive industries such as oil and gas, sand dredging, and commercial fisheries, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mpatlas.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marine Conservation Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/publication\/62121\/30x30-from-global-ocean-treaty-to-protection-at-sea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace International\u2019s report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released in 2023 details how ocean warming, acidification, pollution, and the emerging threat of deep sea mining are placing ever more strain on ocean ecosystems, making clear the urgency of political action to protect 30% of the world\u2019s oceans by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hemphill Continued:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe idea behind 30\u00d730 is that we fully or highly protect 30% of the planet to act as a reservoir of life and renewal for the other 70% that humans are occupying and depleting. Simply drawing lines on a map but allowing business as usual in that area doesn\u2019t count as a conservation success. Biden\u2019s vision is a good one.
