Sysco, a global giant in food distribution and supply, caters to a wide array of clients, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sysco.com\/Customers\/Who-We-Serve\/Government.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various branches of the US government<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from federal offices to educational institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sysco has taken some steps to address the situation, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seafoodsource.com\/news\/premium\/supply-trade\/sysco-vows-to-cease-purchasing-seafood-from-chishan-group?utm_source=marketo&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter&amp;utm_content=newsletter&amp;mkt_tok=NzU2LUZXSi0wNjEAAAGQkjqxTm7IHfV31phczvAfPOHfeMZzjpIyh6s4KTlcOVzFeF1RYPd6O6uuhAApJeQt8YKGIS9DRDuGO0epjhrgc4RbyrxGfWIaT1jqIj8k1oGHpgINAw\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promising to cut ties with one such named company, the Chishan Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, the congressional leaders voiced concerns about the adequacy of the company\u2019s response to address the other corporate entities implicated in forced labor and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) practices in its supply chain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>John Hocevar, Greenpeace USA\u2019s oceans campaign director, said:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cThe US is one of the largest consumers of seafood in the world, and the government has a responsibility to ensure that forced labor and environmental damage are not part of the supply chain for getting seafood onto US plates. Greenpeace USA supports Representative Huffman\u2019s call to the Biden administration to prohibit the Federal Government from acquiring or obtaining any seafood product from companies with substantiated connections to IUU fishing or forced labor, including prohibiting entering into, extending, or renewing contracts with entities involved in the importation or distribution of seafood products produced through IUU fishing or forced labor. We also encourage a whole-of-government approach to addressing IUU fishing and forced labor. This should include prompt and decisive action by US agencies, such as US Customs and Border Protection and the Departments of Treasury and State, on petitions related to these issues in the global seafood supply chain, such as Withhold Release Orders.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multiple reports from the Greenpeace network and other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usa.oceana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/03\/No-Questions-Asked-March-2023-FINAL.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NGOs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/reports\/gpea-report-fake-my-catch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegal fishing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-southeastasia-stateless\/2019\/12\/c4f6f6b4-greenpeace-seabound-b.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">human rights abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/publication\/44492\/forced-labour-at-sea-the-case-of-indonesian-migrant-fisher\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced labor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are pervasive in the seafood industry across companies and countries.
