(Jan. 25, 2023)\u2013In response to the Biden administration\u2019s announcement to reinstate \u201cRoadless Rule\u201d protections, Amy Moas, Ph.D., Greenpeace USA Senior Climate Campaigner, said:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cToday, the U.S. Forest Service rescued the nation\u2019s largest national forest, Alaska\u2019s Tongass, from new and catastrophic surges of clearcut logging. The reinstatement of this popular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earthjustice.org\/features\/timeline-of-the-roadless-rule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2001 conservation measure that conserves old growth<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is crucial for the protection of some of the last and largest remaining tracts of intact temperate rainforest in the world, as well as the wildlife and carbon it holds. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a thriving Tongass is critical to the lives and subsistence of Alaska Natives, and the local economy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In January 2020, the US Forest Service received a quarter of a million comments in response to the draft proposal to gut this conservation measure \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seacc.org\/foia_roadlessrule\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">96% of which voiced support for safeguarding the Roadless Rule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In October 2020, the Trump administration moved ahead anyway and removed roadless protections, putting the nine million acres of previously protected old growth forest in jeopardy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Moas continued: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDestructive development in this region \u2014 such as the expansive logging and road building that the Trump administration green lighted in late 2020 \u2014 would be catastrophic for generations to come. Healthy forests are our first line of defense in the fight against the growing climate emergency, and we must do everything possible to prioritize wildlife, and the wellbeing of our planet. Today\u2019s decision does just that; however, there is more to do.
