Ed Markey (D-Mass.) and Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) introducing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markey.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/senator-markey-introduces-legislation-to-combat-energy-intensive-cryptomining-as-it-strains-grid-undermines-us-climate-goals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crypto-Asset Environmental Transparency Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which requires more reporting and analysis of the climate and energy impacts of cryptocurrency mining and will set mining energy efficiency standards, <\/span><b>Rolf Skar, Greenpeace USA <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/cleanupbitcoin.com\/\"><b><i>Change the Code<\/i><\/b><\/a><b> Lead, said: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe applaud Sen. Markey and Rep. Huffman for taking initiative on regulating crypto mining\u2019s climate impact. The largest climate polluter in the industry is \u2013 by far \u2013 Bitcoin. That is because it still relies on energy-intensive \u201cProof of Work\u201d mining. Its electricity use has skyrocketed in the last five years and to access cheap energy, Bitcoin miners have revived dirty fossil fuel power plants, harming communities and our climate. The increased transparency required in this bill will be an important step to address Bitcoin\u2019s carbon footprint.
