A expedi\u00e7\u00e3o ocorreu entre os dias 13 e 17 de setembro, nos munic\u00edpios de Porto Velho, Rond\u00f4nia, e L\u00e1brea, sul do Amazonas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As scientists urge action, satellite monitoring registers highest deforestation rate for the month of February<\/p>\n<p>DETER data shows massive increase for deforestation in February<\/p>\n<p><b>Manaus, Brazil \u2013\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deforestation alerts for the month of February cover 199<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> km\u00b2 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Amazon. This is a 62 percent increase compared to the same month last year and is the highest deforestation rate ever recorded for the month of February since DETER was established in 2016. The data came out days after a landmark<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-022-01287-8\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study from the University of Exeter (UK)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that the Amazon rainforest is approaching a tipping point in which it will fail as an ecosystem. Adding to the increasing trend in deforestation, new figures showed Amazon deforestation alerts to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/usa\/news\/deforestation-in-the-amazon-hits-a-record-high-for-the-month-of-january\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five times those recorded in January 2021<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>In response, Romulo Batista, spokesperson for Greenpeace Brazil, said:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAgribusiness, land grabbers, and the Bolsonaro government are trying to use all the influence they have in the Brazilian Congress to rush through dangerous laws that will dramatically increase deforestation in the immediate future. These direct attacks to the Amazon pose an existential threat to the rainforest and to the global climate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For months now, the agribusiness-dominated Brazilian Congress has been expediting laws that will end environmental licensing requirements, reduce the size of Indigenous territories, and reward land grabbing \u2013 a practice linked to one-third of Amazon deforestation. On March 9, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2022\/02\/brazil-agrochemical-bill-nears-passage-in-bolsonaros-agenda-of-death\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bolsonaro\u2019s allies in the Congress approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the use of emergency measures to consider opening Indigenous Peoples\u2019 lands for mining. This approval occurred under the guise that the Ukraine crisis would jeopardize Brazil\u2019s access to potash, a fertilizer imported from Eastern Europe. Mining in Indigenous Peoples\u2019 lands is currently forbidden under the Brazilian Constitution. The integrity of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 lands have been found to be the most effective solution for lasting forest conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deforestation alerts in the first two months of the year have been a record high \u2013 covering an area of\u00a0 629 km\u00b2, more than triple the area observed for the same period last year, 206 km\u00b2.
