Amidst more dragging of the feet on climate issues by governments and corporations, we have had some notable wins in the climate and environmental justice space. We celebrate these wins to keep the spirits up and to stay hopeful as we continue on with our fight for a better, greener, and fairer world for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class='wp-block-image size-large p4featured_image'><img src='https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/1bc6a9cc-gp0stq8zf_web_size.jpeg' alt='Fiby Urskog Nature Reserve in Sweden' \/><figcaption class='wp-element-caption'>Fiby Urskog is a nature reserve located by Lake Fiby, about 16 kilometers west of Uppsala in Sweden. The area is characterised by its uprooted and fallen trees and moss-rich ground.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Countries join calls to ban deep sea mining.<\/b><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/ad75c637-gp1sv57n-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91077\"\/><figcaption>Greenpeace International activists bearing witness to the deep sea mining industry.<br \/>\u00a9 Marten van Dijl \/ Greenpeace<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace has been urging governments to take action to stop the launch of deep sea mining, a destructive extractive industry that would threaten the ocean and the lives and livelihoods of those who depend on it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, in a win for ocean protection, several countries gave their support for a ban on deep sea mining. After campaigning by Greenpeace and allies, <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scoop.co.nz\/stories\/PO2210\/S00165\/new-zealands-support-for-deep-sea-mining-moratorium-a-win-for-ocean-protection.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aotearoa New Zealand has called for a global moratorium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/nov\/02\/germany-calls-for-precautionary-pause-before-deep-sea-mining-industry-starts\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany has called for a precautionary pause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At COP27, French president Emmanuel Macron announced that he <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.fr\/espace-presse\/statement-on-macron-announcement-against-deep-sea-mining-at-cop27\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supports a ban on deep sea mining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At the International Seabed Authority (ISA) meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, in November, <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.savethehighseas.org\/isa-tracker\/category\/country-positions\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more countries from the Pacific, Latin America, and Europe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called for a precautionary pause, moratorium, or a complete ban.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Global plastics treaty<\/b><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/108b09ea-gp1t7ucs-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91076\"\/><figcaption>Greenpeace projection in Punta del Este, Uruguay as global leaders come together to discuss a global plastics treaty.<br \/>\u00a9 Manuela Louren\u00e7o \/ Greenpeace<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United Nations Environment Assembly announced in March the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/historic-day-campaign-beat-plastic-pollution-nations-commit-develop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adoption of a historic resolution to end plastic pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to open negotiations for a legally binding global plastics treaty, with a target of having the agreement by 2024 or 2025. The resolution addresses the full lifecycle of plastic, including its production, design, and disposal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Global Plastics Treaty is seen to be one of the most significant environmental agreements in history. Greenpeace, together with its allies, demands an ambitious global agreement that will reduce plastic production and use, hold big polluters accountable, build refill and reuse systems, and empower those most affected by the plastic pollution crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Putting a stop to offshore oil activities&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/d75e9b1f-gp1swox2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91072\"\/><figcaption>Organizations including Greenpeace Argentina protest against oil exploration in the Argentine Sea.<br \/>\u00a9 Gabriel Bulacio \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Coastal communities and environmental and social organizations celebrated the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturaljustice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Argentina-Seismic-Testing-Cases.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decision of the Federal Court of Mar del Plata<\/a> against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/argentina\/tag\/marargentino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seismic blasting in the Argentine Sea<\/a>. The court\u2019s decision to halt offshore exploration represents its recognition of the communities and their rights, as well as the destructive nature of the activity on the environment. Greenpeace Argentina will continue to fight for a definitive no to seismic exploration and to stop the progress of oil company projects on the Argentine Sea.<\/p>\n<p>On 1 September 2022, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/55572\/south-africa-celebrates-court-win-to-stop-shell-oil-exploration\/\" target=\"_blank\">South African courts revoked Shell\u2019s exploration rights<\/a> off South Africa\u2019s eastern coast, ruling that they were granted illegally. The judge also acknowledged the key role of the ocean in the livelihoods and the spiritual and cultural life of coastal communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Saying no to air pollution&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/811f1366-gp1szzao.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91084\" title=\"Air Pollution Protest in Jakarta.\"\/><figcaption>Indonesian activists taking action against air pollution in Jakarta.<br \/>\u00a9 Afriadi Hikmal \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In March 2022, in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cer.org.za\/news\/major-court-victory-for-communities-fighting-air-pollution-in-mpumalanga-highveld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landmark judgement for environmental justice<\/a>, the High Court recognised the poor air quality in South Africa\u2019s Mpumalanga Highveld region as a breach of residents\u2019 Constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to their health and well-being.&nbsp;The #DeadlyAir case was launched in 2019 by environmental justice group groundWork and local Mpumalanga community organisation, Vukani Environmental Justice Movement in Action (Vukani). Together they filed a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cer.org.za\/news\/environmental-groups-take-government-to-high-court-over-violation-of-constitutional-right-to-clean-air\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landmark litigation<\/a>&nbsp;to demand that the government clean up the air in the Mpumalanga Highveld.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Indonesia, a group of Jakarta residents, which included Greenpeacers from the Indonesian office, had filed an air pollution lawsuit against President Joko Widodo, the Jakarta governor, and other senior government officials in 2019 to improve the air quality of Jakarta.&nbsp; In 2021, the Central Jakarta District Court ruled that the Indonesian government was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/press\/44679\/seven-indonesias-state-officials-found-negligent-for-jakarta-air-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guilty of failing to uphold the citizens\u2019 right to clean air.<\/a>&nbsp;The President and the other defendants had submitted an appeal but in October this year, the high judicial council&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/putusan3.mahkamahagung.go.id\/direktori\/putusan\/zaed4df847ecefe2933a313534373037.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upheld the initial decision<\/a>, scoring a second win for the citizens and their right to clean air.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Climate change is a human rights issue<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/17c32fdc-gp0stpc1j_web_size.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91085\" width=\"848\" height=\"565\"\/><figcaption>Protestors march the streets, holding a banner reading, \u201cHold the Big Polluters Accountable\u201d in Quezon City, Philippines.<br \/>\u00a9 Vincent Go \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>On 6 May 2022, after years of postponement, the Philippines\u2019 Commission on Human Rights (CHR) released its final report on the world\u2019s first investigation into corporate responsibility for the climate crisis and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/southeastasia\/press\/45336\/landmark-inquiry-finds-legal-grounds-to-hold-climate-destroying-corporations-accountable%EF%BF%BC\/\" target=\"_blank\">declared that climate change is a human rights issue<\/a>.&nbsp; The groundbreaking investigation had been going since 2015 when the first-ever human rights complaint was filed in the Philippines against the world\u2019s largest coal, oil, gas, and cement producers.<\/p>\n<p>While the report is non-binding, it sets a legal basis that will hold corporations accountable for their climate transgressions, sending a clear message that these corporations cannot continue with business as usual of putting profit before people and the planet.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Law to prevent legal bullying of environmental activists<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/09db8732-gp1swsf7.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91086\" title=\"Kill the Bill Protest in London.\"\/><figcaption>A coalition of organisations including Greenpeace, FOE and Liberty protest against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill in London.<br \/>\u00a9 Kristian Buus \/Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>On 27 April 2022, the European Commission released a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/democracy-europe\/46159\/draft-eu-anti-slapp-law-could-protect-journalists-and-activists\/\" target=\"_blank\">new draft EU law to help prevent legal bullying&nbsp;<\/a>of NGOs, journalists, environmental and human rights defenders by corporations, public officials, and powerful individuals. The EU directive against&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/democracy-europe\/3965\/ending-slapps-strategic-lawsuits-against-public-participation\/\" target=\"_blank\">strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs)<\/a>&nbsp;will make it harder for powerful interests to initiate costly and often baseless lawsuits with the aim of intimidating and silencing dissent in cross-border cases. The proposed Directive will have to be negotiated and adopted by the European Parliament and the Council before it can become EU law.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SLAPPs are a threat to freedom of expression, advocacy and assembly rights and their use is rising in the EU: this is an important milestone that many thought was not possible only a few years ago.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The UN declares a healthy environment a human right<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/1bc6a9cc-gp0stq8zf_web_size.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91087\" width=\"838\" height=\"558\"\/><figcaption>Fiby Urskog Nature Reserve in Sweden, filled with unspoiled forest and hiking paths.<br \/>\u00a9 Christian \u00c5slund \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>On 28 July 2022, The United Nations General Assembly declared that everyone on the planet has a right to a healthy environment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly said climate change and environmental degradation were some of the most pressing threats to humanity\u2019s future, and called on states to step up efforts to ensure their people have access to a \u201cclean, healthy and sustainable environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this is an impressive milestone, the resolution is not legally binding on the 193 UN Member States but rather an encouragement for states to implement laws to protect people and the environment. It also paves the way for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/55098\/un-resolution-right-healthy-environment-legal-historic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate and environmental litigation<\/a>&nbsp;by people and organisations around the world against environmentally destructive policies and projects.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Buffer zone for new oil and gas wells<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/e16de82b-gp1swqez_web_size.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91088\" width=\"843\" height=\"563\"\/><figcaption>A pumpjack visible next to a neighbourhood in California.<br \/>\u00a9 David McNew \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In September, California passed Senate Bill 1137, banning new oil and gas wells from being built within 3,200 feet of homes, schools, or hospitals. Research shows that living near drilling sites could pose health risks such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/environepidem\/Fulltext\/2020\/08000\/Oil_and_gas_production_and_spontaneous%20_preterm.1.aspx?context=LatestArticles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">preterm births<\/a>, asthma,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stand.la\/uploads\/5\/3\/9\/0\/53904099\/2500_literature_review_report-v2-share.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">respiratory disease<\/a>, and cancer. This landmark decision will go a long way to protect the people and communities.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The EU passes deforestation law<\/strong><\/h2>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/ec251239-gp0sttdol_web_size.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91089\" width=\"829\" height=\"552\" title=\"green plantation on one side with deforestation on the other, divided by a road\"\/><figcaption>Deforestation for commodity farming, such as these soya plantations in Brazil.<br \/>\u00a9 Victor Moriyama \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The EU has agreed to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/IP_22_7444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new law to fight global deforestation<\/a>.&nbsp; In a world first, companies will have to show that their products have not contributed to deforestation if they want to sell in the EU. The law will require companies to trace their commodities back along the supply chain to the plot of land, and prove that forest was not recently cleared, or face fines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to a WWF report, European Union countries are responsible for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.eu\/?2831941\/EU-consumption-responsible-for-16-of-tropical-deforestation-linked-to-international-trade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">16% of tropical deforestation<\/a>&nbsp;linked to internationally traded commodities like meat, rubber, palm oil, or soy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fight to protect the forests isn\u2019t over yet, but we\u2019re a major step closer!<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Baffinland iron mine rejected<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/static\/planet4-usa-stateless\/2024\/11\/03923527-gp1svduk.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91090\" title=\"Protest against ArcelorMittal in Luxembourg.\"\/><figcaption>Greenpeace Luxembourg activists gather in front of ArcelorMittal\u2019s headquarters in Luxembourg to protest in solidarity with Inuit communities negatively impacted by an iron mine in the Canadian Arctic operated by Baffinland, a company co-owned by ArcelorMittal. The \u201cRespect Inuit Or Leave\u201d banner was designed by Christi Belcourt, an Indigenous artist living and working in Canada.<br \/>\u00a9 Anais Hector \/ Greenpeace<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Canada has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/nov\/17\/canada-arctic-mine-expansion-rejected-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rejected the expansion of an iron mine<\/a>&nbsp;in the Canadian Arctic following several years of protest by Inuit land defenders and their supporters, including Greenpeace Canada and Greenpeace Luxembourg. Baffinland Iron Mines\u2019 planned expansion would have seen it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baffinland.com\/_resources\/pdf\/EIS-Popular-Summary-English.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">double its output of iron ore<\/a>&nbsp;and would have required a 110km railway to a port near the community of Pond Inlet. The mine expansion posed a big threat to the Arctic environment, the wildlife, and the livelihoods of the Inuit people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is a huge victory for Inuit land defenders and the Arctic ecosystem. What\u2019s more, when a high profile project like this gets stopped because of Inuit opposition and allies rallying around them, it shows the industry that they can\u2019t just ignore when Indigenous people say \u201cno\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The language coming from the Canadian government around the decision was also very strong: \u201cThe era of Ottawa overriding Indigenous nations, Indigenous governments for resource development projects in the North, is over,\u201d Canada\u2019s northern affairs minister Dan Vandal,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nunatsiaq.com\/stories\/article\/vandal-rejects-baffinlands-phase-2-expansion-agrees-with-review-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cThe land that the mine is on is not Crown land; it\u2019s Inuit-owned land.\u201d&nbsp; While there\u2019s a ways to go to make the reality match these fine words, it is progress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve come to the end of another year.
